Hello fellow Geotech-ers,
After 10 years of spare-time detector design, I've decided to go into this biz full-time: I am joining the engineering team at White's Electronics. This will have several impacts on Geotech and my role in running it.
First and foremost, Geotech and the forums are here to stay. I started all this over 9 years ago as a way to share otherwise hard-to-find information on metal detector technology and design, and I think it's been a successful effort. Secondly, I have always kept Geotech 100% independent of brands and dealers. I have never accepted advertising or sponsors. That will not change. Despite my personal involvement with White's, all of Geotech will remain independent and neutral.
For the main Geotech web site (non-forums), I will continue running it and posting technical information similar to what I've done in the past. Things like magazine articles, patents, white papers, and so forth. I am hopeful that I will actually have more time to post some fresh information, something that has been lacking lately (sorry
).
For the forums, I haven't decided exactly what to do. My participation in forum discussions has been limited lately due to time constraints, but fortunately there are lots of regulars who keep things going (thanks!). I would like to continue participating, but I will have to be careful to avoid disclosing anything remotely confidential to White's. Obviously, as an employee of White's developing metal detectors, I might use information and ideas that are posted on Geotech. But this is true of anyone, anywhere.
My biggest concern is whether I'm the right person to continue managing the forums. I want to ensure independent and free expression on the forum; I also want to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest, both with the forum denizens and with the folks at White's. So I may decide to turn over forum management to someone else. I am open to feedback & suggestions on this.
Finally, last fall I created a "Commercial Design Group" with the intention of developing some new designs that could be commercially developed. There have been good ideas and some sporadic work, but the CDG has been slow to move forward. Right now, I don't know of a good way to continue with this effort, and I'm not sure what to do with the Group. I'll open this for discussion in the CDG forum.
I want to personally thank everyone who has participated in Geotech over the years. I've certainly learned a lot! I'm committed to keeping Geotech the #1 repository for technical information on metal detectors, and the best place for tech-heads
to discuss detector designs.
Regards,
Carl
