  • New Here, Howdy! Machine Mods?

Howdy all, Found a Mine Lab Relic Hawk for $400.00 as new, complete. Can the NiCad battery be replaced with a Nickle Metal Hyd. and will the charger work on this battery, also any good mods for this machine. I also own a Silver Saber (1st machine 1985), Micro Bandito (2nd 1996), and a Mine Lab XT18000 (3rd 2001) any good mods for these machines. Use to live in Phoenix, Az untill Oct. 2007, the Micro Bandito still to this day has found more Gold, Relics, and Coins than the Mine Lab XT18000, and has out preformed a lot of detectors, costing 2-3 times as much at coin shoots.
    Thanks Turtle

Don't know the answer to you questions but I bet Max would be interested in some pics of your RH . I am guessing you can change battery types and be ok.

      Hi,
indeed I'm interested... in that pictures... and also if you can look for some connections there.

I'm doing RH clonage in another thread... you can find under "schematics"... sure if we'll complete clonage there will be also modifications and improvements to that design.

Of course, RH is already a big beast so you're really lucky having one!

Just maybe need some experience to get maximum from it... as all MDs I think.

If you wanna partecipate in the clonage adventure you'll be welcome!

      Kind regards,
      Max

        Hi ,
Yes the charger should work without problem with your batteries, but as capacity is probably much higher you will need more time to fully charge them.
I am a Cloner too and i can confirm that pictures if the RH board would be VERY welcome!
Your experience about discrimination (in air too) will be apreciated.

          Hi,
I think the best for RH is still gel-type SLA battery, 12V.

I don't see real good reasons to change it for NIMh... that are usually not such smart apart weight issues.

Anyway, they will work too on it... don't know if good as with original or not (I'm skeptic that NiMh could perform good there).

          Kind regards,
          Max

I completely agree , i donĀ“t like Nimh batteries at all. They show (on their label) amazing capacity and i used them, then i switched back to good ni-cd ones.
Main problem with ni-mh (at least mines) is that they were unable to supply enought current,so they are good for many hours but at very VERY low rate.
They are totally unable to supply hight peaks of current, which can be dramatic in some applications.
            Regards,
            Fred.
