  • Better forum search

I don't know where to post this, but I hope other people agree and we can ask for change.

We need to be able to search for small words like RK7 or .022 or R55, etc. on technical forums like this. It will help us not ask repeated questions in threads when people can't find discussion for a part or abbreviation like mH, ohm, etc.

Usually text indexers can have a list of ignored words rather than a size limit -- it would be a lot better for us. Yes, indexer might run a little slower but it shouldn't affect search speed much and we really need it.

Is there some way we can make a noise and have this changed?

Unfortunately it might affect whole thunting site, but it's time that computers should do the hard work, not us.

    Let's ask for it.

    Cheers,

    SB

        Better forum search

I would like to see some changes Too !!!! It has been over 3 years now , on this V-Bulletin Format !!! That is ok . But a few more Forum Priviledges should be given for the Guru or Senior Members , that have earned years of respect and trust . The ones who follow the rules and treat other members with respect. And who are very Carefull what their posts say and also know what photos can be posted . Now Carl is Leaving , so maybe the new administrator will listen to any complaints or suggestions. Simonbaker , others , Like you said about the Forum "Search" not precision enough , Correct!!! I have trouble searching Archives , and I know it is there, I do not have altzheimers Yet !!! Same as me wanting to see thread reductions , where we have 3 separate threads on the same subject. I would like to merge a subject at times . Also one more big thing , we can not do is save a "quote" from a coil thread and carry it over to the Tech thread , Make Sense ??? , Also we have a 15 minute limit on our edits . When you type and the whole world reads it , Yes I think spelling is important !!!!! Later I am going to re-register just using my first name and age for this forum because I am not allowed to change my current user name to a different one !!! Anyway , This Geotech Forum is the Greatest Metal Detector Forum in the world , But sometimes asking for the little things might be Too much , So I guess just appreciate what we have . But just a few small changes , may make a big difference on speed and accuracy for members and the server TOO !!!...............Eugene51

Carl is leaving? Where am I going?

This is the first I've heard of most of these requests. I have changed the search to allow as little as 2-character words. I don't see a reason to search for single characters.

Thread reductions are not practical. There are many threads on the subject of, say, PI front-ends. I would not want to try to combine them all, because it would result in an incomprehensible mess. Think of each thread as a "conversation."

Can't take a quote from one forum over to another, sorry, I don't know of any forum that does that. Just do a copy-paste.

15-minute limit... OK, that has been asked before, so I bumped it to 1 hour. I don't want to make it unlimited because, again, a thread is a conversation and I don't want people going back weeks later and changing what they said. And I've seen other forums where someone leaves and deletes everything they ever posted.

Change your user name... vB can't do this, but there may be an add-on that allows it. I'll check.

Any other suggestions? My aim is to please!!

          - Carl

              Carl,

I just tried a search of the entire site for "555" (without the quotation marks).

No hits. Am I doing something wrong?

              Thanks,

              JOe

Thanks Carl! Both those changes most helpful. I often see mistakes in my post and need to edit later too, so 1 hour is better.

I tried search also for "R47" and no hits. I think the "indexer" for the database needs to be rerun now to reindex the whole site again with the 2-character limit.

What software is used for database and indexing, by the way?

I agree this is a great forum - most interesting and good people.

vB has its own built-in search & indexer. I did a rebuild on the indexer and it still doesn't work with '555'. I will have to look at this later, heading out right now to test some detectors.

                    Better forum search

I think there is a minimum number of characters or letters you must type before the search will actually kick in. Like two small sets of words or two sets of numbers. "555" might not be enough to trigger the search , BUT then again adding just one more word adds a hundred pages of stuff you do not need to look for !!!!!!!!!! It is a big Forum , and I know searching for a particular item is frustrating sometimes. I am not an expert on V-Bullitin But do not worry , Carl the administror will address all issues , he always does . I am just making an opinion here , I am not complaining . What would be great is to have a Complete "CD-Set of the Entire Forum" !!!!!!!!!! But its a very big website and it would take multiple discs. There is a way to download this entire website with the proper software .I have already copied over 300 mega-bytes of this web-site. But I think I am only at 20 % of the total , It takes time . I downloaded all of Tesoro-Golden Sabre and all the PDF patent files and that alone took one day !!!! Everyone take care and have a Great Day , I think the search issues will be resolved...................Eugene51

                      works on recent

555 search works now, but only on this thread -- probably because recent. Suggests entire site needs reindexing, then will work!

                        re-indexing

                        Carl:

Can you take another crack at indexing the existing threads? We still cannot search any messages that are older than the time you switched to a 2-character search -- is very important, so much information and very long threads.

What software is used for the website?

                        Thanks,

                        -SB
