  • Having trouble finding a Panel Ohm meter any ideas?

Hi I am building the Underground Survey unit. I have all the components I need but I am having trouble locating a decent Panel ohms meter. I have searched the net for a few hours now and I get the rubbish and not what I need. Any ideas or suppliers that you guys recommend?

    Thanks for the help!

Having trouble finding a panel ohm meter any ideas ?

Hello , Build it yourself , or it will cost you a good chunk of hard earned money !!! Here is one suggestion , Jameco Electronics , Electronic Goldmine have panel meters at a very good price. I think either a 0-50 micro-amp or a 0-1 milli-amp full scale deflection is all you need . Then you will have to do some simple basic ohms law calculations to determine what parallel resistance to add to the panel meter that will give you the proper resistance readings at full scale , and then build the simple add-on circuit . Otherwise , you will spend a bunch of money on a Custom built Panel "OHM METER" from an expensive manufacturer !!!.....................Regards.............Eugene 52

For that project all you really need is a simple multimeter. You could use something, like a Simpson 260, which will hold up well and last forever. Or, you can use something like this which is cheap but will do the job.

Many auto parts houses carry cheap analog multimeters. And most electronic parts houses have them or can get them. Also, there is no reason that I can think of that it has to be analog. A digital multimeter should work fine also.

Eugene, something else I just thought about. If you are building your own ohm meter, which I think is a good project btw, you would need a meter movement with a reverse Log scale. A mirrored movement also helps if you want to be precise in your measurements.

Thanks for the help guys. I am going to hook up a basic volt ohm meter for starters then build the ohm myself. Looks like a great project. I will post pics soon as I get this together. Thanks again!
