at finding gold fist sized objects? I'm thinking the Lorenz Deep Max3?? Or perhaps the Goldscan 5C but it does not have the 1 meter square coil capability.

What detector is by far the best...

It is strange that you have had no replies.
The best detector for fist sized Nuggets at depth is believe it or not an old SD-2000 detector with a large coil say 30" and modified to run a 1Mhz timebase. Also the gain stage in the integrators can be boosted by a large amount.
None of the new detectors will come anywhere near the depth that these older detectors exhibit on larger Gold objects.

So you have a SD-2000 that you want to mod to go deep? If you look at my site it is full of technical information and has links to my Youtube video's that show many repairs and upgrades to Minelab P.I detectors.
If there is a reasonable show of hands I will do an article on how to mod a SD-2000 into a super deep seeking detector.

the Goldscan you can make it work with a larger coil 1mx1m or more.
That's true for almost all PI you can vary timings etc so "not-fixed" but versatile designs, and goldscan it is.
Now the problem is where to find a goldscan !
I made the GS4 but it's not trivial task to make one... so better if will find something used but working... or can use lorentz etc.
Remember: the PIs do not discriminating anything... any discrimination is either a waste of time or a chance to miss something valuable.
So, depending on the depth you think objects are located you may need a depth pi but will not get any reliable disc, whatever you'll pay for one.
You could use a ML thing and get much reliable results on disc feature ...like Woody suggested but you'll pay much for one... so must be serious and motivated also to the potential expense otherwise don't lose your time with old projects etc will be not the right way.
Kind regards,
Max

Hi Guy's
I owned a Gold Scan 5B for around 6 months, even though it was a good detector the SD-2000 would beat it on large deep targets. At a detector test site at Dunolly in Victoria Australia we tested various detectors with a 30" coil in very mineralized ground. The only detector that could get a signal on out test block (13 Oz Gold) at 3 feet deep was the SD2000.
The SD2000 will detect a Coke can at 4 feet with the same 30 inch coil.
The new types of detectors like GP and GPX will not under any circumstances go deeper than the Old SD2000 on Large Targets.

yes, you're right, I agree. The GS series is made of old good pieces but in very hi-mineralized soil they aren't so good as ML's ones, SD2000 expecially.
In hi-mineralized soil that kind of old style detectors don't shine, though the intentions were good and to combact in that scenario results of ML's are really better than with them.
Of course, one has the problem of getting one ML, then!
But I'm sure there in Australia will be some interesting vintage-market...so will be possible find a good price for a still working SD2000!
Kind regards,
Max
