It seems the variable capacitor there is a mica kind, right ? So really stable on frequency about that (if inductance is enough stable too, like usually is in rigid coils). Also, I think it's something hundreds Khz thing... long wave kind, maybe something between 100 and 400Khz.
I don't know schematic but I see a ton of old caps in it: if you have to repair you need change all that electrolitic caps...for new ones.... no good there... sure are dried up and won't work the right way.
About the clip... maybe uses some unconventional battery thing ? Who knows ?

Yes, you're right. Electrolitic caps. must be replaced by news! I repair an old Fisher two boxes and replace old cap. The rec. part of the pic I think is old Detectron or Goldak... but don't sure.
