What is best MD project....

I've been wanting to build a metal detector ever since my dad bought one 40 years ago. On and off over the years I've searched for articles on MD design and construction and know enough to be dangerous. I have fairly extensive technical skills (electronic design, test, circuit board layout, PCB fabrication/construction, etc.) so not afraid to tackle something complex.

Also have reasonable mechanical capabilities in terms of constructing search coils.

I'd like a design that fits "general metal detecting", more toward small objects such as coins but with occasional large object search.

I would appreciate opinions/advice from those who have built their own MD.
