Building a machine?

Ok have a question, please dont rape me b/c Im new either just trying to learn. I know that you can buy kits that you can BYO detector with my neighboor is one of them, he is trying to build a PI machine. My question is,can you build a handheld GPR "ground penetrating radar". I would like to build something that will help me look for huts,trash pits,priveys, etc... But I dont have or even want to spend the thousands that it cost for a GPR. I would think all you would need is something that could penetrate deep into the ground and bounce a signal off of anything solid or any disturbences in the ground. So can you build one specifically for that purpose, and if so can someone send me some info please.

Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.
