Nautilus DMCIIBa problem

Has anybody here experiences with the Nautilus DMCIIBa? I have this machine but it doesn't work the way it should. Detecting in the air works very well (an Euro in 35 cm with an 8" coil) but in the ground it shrinks to 6" which is very poor for this deepseeking machine.
I assume that something with the ground balance is not working the way it should. Since I live in Germany it would take a long time to send it to the company in Coats for service. May be somebody here has a clue. I love to tinker too...

In another forum another Nauti user reported the same problem. Seems it is not uncommon for this machine.

There may not be any problem at all. Depending on the soil that can be normal for just about any IB detector. I have a DMCIIb and I cannot get any deeper than 6" either.. Or with my Shadow X5, or with my Whites XLT, or with any of my Tesoros! But If I go somewhere that the ground is just loose sand and NOT hard packed clay, it goes much deeper!! Don't be discouraged.

You may just have to hunt in the all metal mode to get better performance.

Thanks for your quick input Don. The ground here is sand covered with a little soil/leaves. I think easy ground for a detector. May be the sand has ertain minerals in it. I don't now. If what you are saying is true I am disappointed about the Nautilus. I could have bought an ACE 250 instead.
But may be I am just expecting too much after reading all sorts of depth tests of various detectors.

As far as I understand the Nautilus it works always in all metal non motion/ discriminate motion if I use it in ground reject discrimination mode.
That is the speciality of the Nautilus detector.
I achieve the 6" in that mode.
The other mode -non motion TR Disk - discrimiates very nice but the search depth is even less.

I think the only difference between the DMCIIb and the IIa is that I can adjust the gain of the channels individually, and I have to manually balance the loop. I can turn the Disc channel down and the all metal mode way up. If you can't get any deeper than 6" in sand, then that makes me wonder.. unless it's black sand or something like powdered magnetite. Does the machine ground balance OK?

Have you tried detecting in the same area with another detector (maybe an ACE 250)? Then you will know if it's a ground or detector problem.

I think that Qiaozhi is right.... you'll almost have to shake your area out with another machine of some sort to be sure it isint somthing in the ground.... here where i live.... in west coast... south new jersey.... i have a thin layer of mulchy leaf dirt.... then white sand... then orange gravely sand..... these layers happen within 6 inches or so .... i somtimes have fitts getting a detector to ground balance....
i have an older d.m.c.1 vlf.... i had alot of trouble when i first got it 2 years ago..... i ended up calling nautilus in North Carolina.... (cause i thought it was broke) the fellow i spoke to spent a half hour on the phone with me.....giving me the basics... and tricks... to make my machine jump... he sent me a manual for free as well.... i have gotton comfortable with it since then..... and pull it out several times each season.... when the fields get plowed... it's an awesome relic hunter.... i've had some good finds with it....... but i was two steps from tossin it when i got it....

I have Nautilus,great machine. In normal ground detection power is the same as the Gold Maxx with same size coil.
I can say Nautilus is a true relic hunter,have found nice relics VERY DEEP.
Try your DMCIIba with the TRANSMIT POWER just one quarter clockwise for mineralized ground and tree quarters clockwise for normal ground.
If you are using to much transmit power in mineralized soil,detector not go deep.
