  • Early Garrett help needed please

I've just aquired an early Garrett S-2.
The problem is there is no sound from the headphones or the speaker. Plus when turned on,the needle goes all the way to the right. But the battery test 1 and 2 works fine.
    Any ideas please

        Hi there.
It might be. But have no idea what it is for or why it's been placed on the board

I've unsoldered that component and tried it again. Still the same result. So have put it back on.
          Any more ideas please?

That capacitor is part of the phase shift network, which feeds the CA3290 comparator. Someone cut the original off. Note the holes where the original was on the top side of the PCB. Because this detector only had a 3 position switch for disc. The cap was added to adjust the discriminate range for a certain target. For the no audio problem try changing the LM358 near the blue trimpot. That modulates the audio and drives the meter. The battery check does not need the LM358, and is probably why it functions.
Let us know how it turns out.

                  Hi Roy.
Am in the UK. But thanks for the kind offer.
Not soldered anything like this before though. Is it that hard to do please?
I was thinking of cutting each leg off then unsoldering them one at a time, then resoldering them one at a time.
Be great to get this machine working again

                    Hi Ash,

As Rov said they are cheap. I think in the UK there is a company called Farnell? They are a big supplier. If you have an old fashion stereo/TV repair shop near by, they have them. Ebay UK?,Google "LM358 UK"? Buy 2 or 3 of them in case it is the other one.

You are exactly right about cutting each lead and then unsoldering. Take a pair of needle nose pliars and pull from the top while applying heat on the solder side. Each pin add a little solder to the tip of your iron. This helps the heat transfer faster and avoids damage to the circuit board. Take your time! You can do it. Or you can take it to the old fashion stereo/TV repair shop and have them do it.

                    Regards
                    Mark

                            I've bought 4 LM358N's from Bitsbox.
Was very easy to deal with.
I'll keep you updated with the outcome, when the items arrive and have been fitted.

                              New update.

I've replaced both the LM358N's and it is still the same.
Is there anything else to try please?
