  • Buying coil housings in the UK ???

    Hi Guys,

Does anyone know where to buy coil housings in the UK like the ones sold by Hays electronics in the US ??? See link

    http://www.hayselectronics.com/parts.htm

I'm having a murderous time trying to make a robust, waterproof coil and don't really want to build a vacum forming plant or import a 100 units from abroad. Any help or suggestions appreciated.

    Regards, Jim.

If you ever find somewhere then please let me know. I did import some coil housings from Hays Electronics some time ago, but the quality is quite poor. Also, you get caught by an unexpected import duty.

Hmmm. Thanks for the warning about import tax. I wonder if many people here in the UK have the same problem??? Might be worth me building that vaccum former after all if people would buy some of the coil housings.

      Any takers???

If the result is some good quality coil housings, you will have a ready market, not only in the UK.

          Hi,

Not made any coils for a while now, but still have and they still work coil housings made with marine ply with the coil fitted underneath covered with fine glass fibre as you find in motor spares shop for doing car bodywork repairs.

          Cheers,

          beachcomber.

            Thanks Guys,

I'm sure you are right Qiaozhi, there doesn't seem to be much available at the moment. Will have to do a bit more research and find a source of suitable plastic, it may take some time to get something up and running. Have recently spent far to many hours cutting strips of PVC pipe, curving them and glueing them together with the coil inside. It does make a nice, ultra light coil but is very labour intensive and easy to cock up. I figured i could build a vacum former with about the same time and effort as one coil is currently taking, then bosh out loads dead easy.

Thanks Beachcomber, have tried Ply on VLF coils in the past and got some reasonable results, but found they were quite weighty and if the slightest bit of water gets in then all hell breaks loose! I'm currently working on P.I's for use on the beach and in rockpools so water proofing is top of my list.

            Regards, Jim.
