how deep will a 1 pound object sink in the ground in a years time in soft black dirt. does anyone know?

    deano,

A lot depends on rain fall amounts and whether the object is in a runoff path. It also depends on tektonic activity in the area and time of year for that activity. If you had a ground tremor during the dry season very little settling might occur but it's in the rainy season you'd expect it to settle quite a bit.

It all depends upon the vargaries of Mother Nature!

ok thanks for the info. its not in a runoff path.very little tektonic activity if any and no ground tremors. but it has been through ten rainy seasons. so how far down do you think it might be?

Depends on the density of the object relative to the density of the ground. Is this a pound of depleted uranium, or a pound of styrofoam?

believe it or not it was a pound of glacier gold. here let me tell you my story.about 11 years ago i bought my first metal detector the whites spectrum xlt.after using it for about a year. i took it to a nature trail that ran along side a river.i was looking for coins.i wasnt finding much that day.but about 5 hours in to the hunt i got a hit on my meter.it was reading like a gold object.i dug it up it was down about 3 inches on top if some rocks.i pulled out a yellow bar about 5 inches long and about 1 inch thick.to me it look like a shiny piece of melted brass. i didnt know that if it was brass or copper it would be tarnished.and me not knowing anything about gold nuggets.i got mad and threw it in the woods.about 7 years later i started watching gold fever on tv.they was showing some glacier gold.and it looked just like what i found.so now im trying to find it again. it felt like it weighed about a pound.so now i need a metal detector that goes deep enough to find it. any suggestions

If no one else found it, then it's likely no more than a few inches deep. Assuming reasonably firm ground, typical foliage, etc. Should be easy to locate, if your memory of the original location is accurate. Memories can be tricky, tho...

Most likely it wouldn't sink at all.

Take a look at Rocks laying on the ground in your area.

                  Sinking Feeling

I do not think that left alone heavy items will sink at all. There are rocks and stones, large and small all over Mars and the Moon. been there millions of years without sinking. Why should they sink.

Whether an item sinks in the ground depends on a number of factors. Its relative density, size, shape, ground compaction, rain, freeze/thaw cycles, grass, foliage, and foot traffic are a few I can think of. Sometimes it doesn't take long; I've dug State quarters at ~3". Sometimes it takes forever.
