  • Silver uMax internal adjustments

Had a bad coil so I sent in detector with it to be calibrated to the new coil. Received machine and depth is almost half of what it was before the "calibration". At max boost I used to get a little chatter like most uMax's do, and good depth, but now it is silent at max. Don't really want to send it back again. Anyone point me at trimmers/POTS, RX/TX, sens, thresh, anything I can play with to get some juice back!

Just one pot inside for ground balance. Ground balance control may have been adjusted too negative or too positive. My guess too positive. Best bet is to ground balance it to your ground not a ferrite rod as they do at the factory.

OK Thanks. Guess it will make it easy to find...

        Sven:

Without a threshold sound to work with how is the ground balance adjusted? My Silver Sabre Plus had a threshold as well as trim pot to adjust. The Silver uMax has neither.

Here's the easiest way, taken from several posts on Findmall.
          =======================

Hay Badger it seems that no one answered your question
about ground ballancing a Silver uMax.

One proplen is that the Silver uMax has only a motion
          discrimination mode.

That makes it harder to ground balance. You have to do
what Monte calls " Power Balancing ".
This is done by accessing the GB pot in the Silver. If you
can not do that, then you may have trouble. It gets harder.

Here's the procedure to power balance any detector.
The Silver remains in the Disc. mode. On the Silver uMax
just set the Disc. to the minimum.

Next, when in the Discriminate mode, and with the search coil held about 8" above the ground (metal-
free of course), bob the coil towards and away from the ground rather quickly, lowering to about 1⁄2"-1"
and then back up to about 6"-8". If you hear an audible 'Beep' on the UP-lift of the coil (away from the
ground) that alerts you to the fact that the GB setting is too negative for ideal performance.
If the detector remains silent as you lower and then raise the coil, you know the GB setting is not too
negative. What you don't know, however, is if it is TOO positive. If it is quiet during the bobbing
          procedure, do this:
SLOWLY decrease the manual GB while you're bobbing the search coil. When you start to hear an
audible 'Beep' on the UP-lift of the coil .. STOP!
Now you're ready to adjust the detector for a "just right" GB setting in the Discriminate mode .... you're
ready to Power Balance the unit.

So, if you have an audible beep on the up-lift of the coil, you know the GB setting is negative. What
you need to do now is very slowly increase the GB control while you quickly bob the search coil
toward-and-away from the ground (6" or 8" down to 1⁄2"-1"), listening for when you to get to a setting
where you just eliminate the false 'Beep' on the up-lift of the coil.
Once you have done that youll have a very "proper" or "just balance" GB setting for the Discriminate
          mode's operation.
Hope that helps, you need to do the 'Power Balancing' in the toggled All Metal mode
as this is still a motion Disc. mode, but with minimal rejection.
I had to Power Balance the last Conquistador μMAX and Silver
μMAX I had because both of them falsed miserably in our
mineralized ground if I wandered out of the woodchips. Their GB
          was too negative.
