I could not buy shells in Australia ,So as I had resin & glass sheet ,so I give it a go ..
I tried to keep it Light in weight [using 2x plys of glass ] the Resin I have is a Marine -resin ..
I made a couple wooden ears & screwed them onto a Plastic Lid to use as a mold outside for the top & inide for a bottom-cover ..
The other pics are my Plastic housing for the board & controlls..

CHEERS from a Cooler Australia But very Humid ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,BARRY..

Check out pot plant saucers for the basis of a shell.

        • HI 6666,, THANKS I did pick-up some of those for later use ,for concentric coil ..

But some are quite flimsy ..as they are but could be reinforced with some glass & resin ..

          THANKS MATE,,,,,,,,,,,,BARRY..

          • barry take a look at frizbees aswell, add ears and they work, they are cheap light strong and injection molded.

            • 2 questions;

SinclairUser what do you use to glue to the Frisbee's?

And Barry how do you get such good results with the fiberglass? I've always had problems with
              air pockets. Here's a couple of pictures of a boat oar I was trying to make;

              • i have used pipe joint adhesive(the ears have to be made from the same type of plastic), the one in the pic the ears are made from perspex(lexan), this is glued to the frizbee with flexable epoxy, there are two nylon number plate bolts to squeeze this together.
but i have done the same design using superglue(the expensive gel superglue), designed for sticking plastics, the cheap pound shop super glue does not work its just not the same, if you clamp this till the superglue dries it works.
the coil in the pic was used all summer, and held together great though none of my coils fell apart.

                • Has anyone used expanding builders foam to flood their 2 part shell . This stuff sets pretty hard and is full of gas bubbles so light. S

                  • Yea.. your coil will likely explode or at least pop apart an you will have a mess. You may want to opt for non expanding foam and be cautious about not overfilling.

                    • It is lively stuff. If you had a vent hole for the excess it would be ok. just trim the cured sprue when done. S

                      • Maybe.. I just remembered one of my projects once that looked like pancacke batter after I heard a loud "pop" in the basement and I did have a vent hole. Wonder what they use in the Whites coils?

                        • I had some success with this: Non-expanding polyurethane glue, used for fitting thermal insulation EPS\XPS boards in construction work. Commercial name of this product is Ceresit CT84, but other manufacturers probably offer similar products worldwide.

                          • HI ALL,,,
Sainclairuser,That a nice shell you built from the frisby ,Did you shield the coils seperately ,,?? or did you shield the inside of the frisby ??? & what did you use for Shielding ?????.

STEVE has a recipe for graphite ,Mixed with epoxy !! that does 2x jobs in one,, that's shielding plus potting !! but mixture needs to be correct other wise it cannot be reversed !!..

DON uses Graphite spray aerosol ,,But IT is not available in AUSTRALIA AnyWhere !![ I have spent a couple hours on the net to try to find] available in USA-UK but not in OZ & cannot post Aerosols]..

Don also can supply great shells at great prices but the USA postage to OZ is too costly ,would be OK if ordering a quantity say 4-5 in one order ,But to a one-time builder may be too costly for one -off's ,,see site here https://sites.google.com/site/dbcoil...ources/epoxies

S/D ...yes the air bubbles need to be rolled out before the resin sets ,As this shell is small area its not too bad to get most air out ,, I use a paint-brush ,but a small roller would be good ..
That oar would be not easy to DO as it has much area to do in one go You could do it in sections as long as not leaving it too long between coats [layers etc] 24 hours max !!

CABLE??? ,,On my 1st attempt I used the common USB 2 cable that most seem to use,,,, Steve & DON use 4x seperately screened cable & or Coax x2 ,which is better??? as to sensitivity & or depth ???
IF away from all powerlines etc etc would any be better than other????for VLF machines ..

I think I will build more Fibre-glass shells as its easy & reasonably Light ,I will paint the shells when i am sure they work A-OK ..But will also try to locate Frisby's [no luck so far in my area finding them] ..

                            ALL-GOOD-FUN ,, CHEERS ALL,,,,,,,,,BARRY..

                            • @ barry home made graphite paint applied to the inside of the shell, originally applied to paper tape stuck on the inside, now i use acrilic paint designed for plastics as my paint base.
i have tried expanding foam but it has problems, firstly there are different grades( lower density is a must), secondly it can force your coil apart, you need to either seal it really well and not put to much in , or not seal it but bolt it together with nylon bolts then trim of the access after it sets then seal it, thirdly some of this foam gets hot as it cures.
but finally some also has iron oxide powder mixed in it and is detectable (by vlf).
personally its not worth the hassle, better to cut sheets of the dried stuff and add it during construction, some of this has iron oxide in it too (the colour gives it away) so test it for detectability.
p.s. beach shops and pet shops sometimes sell frizbees.

                              • HI ,, THANKS for that info S/user ,,thats interesting the Acrilic paint as a base for the graphite I thought that Acrilic paint was water Based ?????..

Yes I think I would give the expanding foam a Miss after the messages recieved here..

YES PET SHOPS !! unfortunately I live 200ks from shops like that but I will check them out..
