The PIC is not a fast processor and there is a bit of math going on to determine metal type.
Same with the other VDI PIC displays (I run the Graphics version).
In field use it is the audio beep that one listens for to know there is a target. Then wave the coil back and forth across the target to get a VDI. The beep is used to 'pin point' target location not the VDI.
