the best advice for china machines is buy from a retailer not internet, so you can try a few to make sure its ok, that 5-10 pounds extra on the price is worth its weight in gold.
second replace the bottom shaft for plastic, and add a plastic bolt(makes a big difference) instead of the metal one used, and they run fine, changing coils for better made ones helps too, for tinkerers with time and bits laying round its well worth the effort.
and then grandkids can join in without risking your good tackle, or can be left in the caravan just for holidays(thats what i have done, a barracuda and china vlf in the van permanently ready to go).
GREAT S/USER ,to get-away in the VAN ,We have an old SELF fitted-out ''Toyota-Coaster Bus'' Great for the wife & I , all 12v with plenty battery & solar panel etc ,Camp anywhere.. GOOD-STUFF..

I bought these 2x China M/D's a couple years ago from an OZ online store I got 2 for the price of 1 on a special $80.00 for both ..
But we have not as yet really used them ,Due to other commitments etc etc.. But we are to go-out soon ..[In the Camper]..

MADE a DD coil today for china unit,,,, not potted yet [in testing stage] TX2.85uh- RX.10.85uh that what my meter shows ..used .5 wire for TX 78 turns ,RX 0.2 wire 140 turns ..

I am trying to map-out the Circuit starting from TX amp to study the similarity ''if-any '' to IDX TGSL or similar ..
Will try to identify the CHIPS for maybe replacements ???

    I have MANY MANY grandchildren oldest 32 y/old ..

CHEERS MATE ENJOY THAT VAN ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,BARRY..

I did not bother with the display. If its not iron I dig it

            • and 'I build my first metal, the display I'd like to put it, but unfortunately I do not have the knowledge to build it, but it sounds like the iron copper in this project or has the distinction of sounds?

              • The IDX as basic build has No tone for small clean iron
It has a tone for non ferrous ( or LARGE rusty Iron )

The 2 tone, add on board gives iron tone plus normal non ferrous tone

                • HI everyone!
In this weekend I finaly made a field test with Silverdog PCB + my DIY DD 27.5 coil.
In the first place(near from amatier airport) detector was realy noisy- unusable, in the second place (in forest) it was more stable, but i notice 2 things:

                  1. When i move coil wire (microphone wire 4x + shielding) i got beep, beep. it is normal? (The coil reacts to coil wire movment)
                  2. My home made 27.5 DD coil has 3 responding zones - abowe, below and from the sides.??

You need to try and stop the cable moving on most metal detectors as its metal!! I wrap them around the shaft once I have extended the head to the length I require. Then I use cable ties, top and bottom to help further....

But I am no expert, so I will be watching and seeing how others do it.

                    Regards

                    • hello guys, I started to assemble the components in the kit ... I noticed that I was missing 2 capacitors, a 22n and 3n3, fortunately I've already bought and installed. Later I connect the potentiometers, later I will 'help to connect garrett the plate, but I struggle to find its connector. :-)

1 yes normal any movement of the cable need to be stopped I use some rubber bands but you can just rap the cable around the shaft.
2 yes normal does mean you can not detect right up to a metal fence with this type coil
