  • That's normal. Its how you know how deep a target is. You can make it slightly louder towards the end in discrimination mode by turning the threshold fully up. I find no advantage in doing this in the field as the last inch or so is a very scratchy sound which is doubtful you would dig (does not show up on YouTube you need headphones on)but with headphones on the faint clean you would dig knowing it is a good deep target.

The type of headphones / speaker also affects it. For speaker I used a small 32 ohm which is a bit quite. Headphones maximum sound is with cheap earbuds but I use homemade headphones with 50 ohm speakers in series. You really hear the difference between a good target and large iron.

The MSPA13 can be changed for a 14 which is. Louder you really don't want to do this as your ears will hurt if hunting in iron.

Well, good thing is i'm not hunting with headphones, i ordered bc517 and mpsa14.
Koala, do u have vdi on your idx? I just finished Don's version with Arduino, from first connection i got poor depth on vdi. LCD show target only on 2 inches. Must try to wind new coil, on this one i got 42 cm for 2 £. coin.

      • Never bothered with the VDI

there is enough feedback from the audio.

From memory 37 cm on a UK 2p made no difference if it was copper clad or coper alloy

you can tweak the RX cap to give over 40 cm on the 2p but would not recommend it. Ground balance and discrimination are affected and becomes to unstable in the real world/field the amount of discrimination you use badly affect depth. Use just enough for a small nail and larger iron breaks through. Not a problem with headphones as iron will be a sharp tone not the more rounded good tone. To a degree I can tell deep coin from coke and aluminium from there tone in both modes.

People were reporting the original VDI was good for between 50% and 75% of the detectors maxim depth so expect Dons to be the same

        • hi .
out put of TX near 13 t0 16 volt is ok?? how we use 8 volt of it
and out put of RX how many volts?
          regards

          • 16 ish volts works fine at 14V
            less than 200 mV RX

hi my old friend .please explain how 16 volts.my means the voltage of tx is 8 volt not 16volts
              thanks

Not sure what you are asking for. Some info here

Higher volts only alter depth by a small amount at the cost of battery life.

Smaller volts improves separation by a small amount

Its all a compromise depth vs separation guess Whites decided 16V was the best

                      • hey does anyone have the wire schem for the blue max 950 I guess whites says it will work for the IDX so I would like to try it out. please and thanks guys.

                        • I guess I was asking for pinouts for whites 950 blue max coils or maybe someone knows how to test to figure it out. carl you used to work there do you know anything about it?

                          Comment

                          • Yes the 950 is an excellent coil for the IDX

TX has much lower resistance the RX

Should take to much experimentation TX wrong way round and it will not null. RX wrong way round and it will work fine but double beep.

                            • sounds easy enough to figure out thanks and I thought this coil would work so im very happy thank you for the help.
