  • Surfmaster PI Longboard First Test

Just completed my PI longboard and 10" searchcoil.

Powered up. Disapppointed with the volume output in my headphones (Killer Bees), barely any volume after adjusting the boards pot. Figured speaker 150 ohm rating may be the problem. Switched over to a 32 ohm headset, much better.

After figuring out the adjustments and playing with a gold man's wedding band and some coins the detector has potential. Air test coins to about 6", wedding band to about 6-7".
It will also find very thin women's white and yellow gold rings changing the adjustments to maximize small gold detection, air test to about 4".

One thing I noticed it will still detect in air pull tabs, bottle caps, nails and such . It will not detect small pieces of aluminum foil or hair pins.

Still more experimenting needed and have two more completed boards to test out.

The search coil was just 22g magnet wire, 19-20 turns, 10" connected to a USB cable. Winder built using my cheap leftover scrap parts I had around.

Replace ordinary speaker with larger piezo speaker.
Find one with larger plastic resonator enclosure.
You will be delighted with sound!
Or replace resistor 33 ohms with ...let's say 4.7 ohms..
      SurfPi is nice...

        It is good?
        In land use?
        Coils need to shield it?

Played around air testing today using a man's wedding band 14kt and a small womens thin band ring 10kt as well as a Loonie and Toonie.
Adjusted the controls to get max. air depth and compare the finding to an actual White's Surfmaster Pro PI.

My findings were identical, both the White's and my built version could pick up the items the same distance from the coil.

Faint sounds at max. distance but, you can make out the signal response using standard headphones.
Will be looking for the Piezo speakers shortly.

          Mans wedding band----------10" (25.5cm)
          Small womens ring-----------6 1/2" (16.5cm)
          Loonie & Toonie---------------9" (23cm)

Thanks, switched to a 1.2 ohm which I had on hand. Nice and loud now.

Distinguish between gold and iron, how to listen to the sound?

The Surf PI cannot discriminate between ferrous and non-ferrous. Hence it certainly will not be able to discriminate between gold and iron.

Landlord, with the hopes of finding your detector over gold?
