  • Whites Eagle spectrum

I couldn't resist to buy a Whites Eagle spectrum hipmount version on ebay. At first I was very happy with my toy. I can run it with Preamp gain 4 and AC sens 65 in areas without power lines nearby. Recently it starts to be rebellious after running stable for an hour or two. In the rebellious mode it suddenly sounds all sort of sounds like it is suddenly super sensitive to EMI. I switched of my mobile. I had this effect in very remote areas where it was running normal quiet for some time. Turning Preamp gain and AC sens down cures the malady only slightly. After switching the detector off and waiting for 30 Minutes it works again ok for a while until the rebellius mode starts all over.
I think old electrolyte capacitors may cause the instability.
Has anybody here some experience rejuvenating an Eagle spectrum? May be it has some known weak parts which cause problems. The power supply?

    Greetings Ganesh

    Hi
Next time you go out take an extra fresh set of batteries with you.
Wait until the problem appears and then change the batteries.
If I remember well I use to have a similar problem with my eagle and the rechargeable batteries in it.
I fresh set of batteries used to fix the problem.
    Good luck

Ganesh, what type batteries are used in your machine - alcaline or rechargeable cells?

        noisy Eagle

Thank you for the hints. I use rechargable Ni-mh C cells. The voltage is displayed at the beginning and is 5.5 or little less right after charging. The cells are from a cheap brand. May be they are the culprit? I'll use different ones and experiment with an external power supply to see what happens.

          how did you go?
did you try new batteries on the Egale?

Ganesh, for best results, you should use a charger which charges each NiMH cell separately. For example:

I had a similar problem, the detectors lose sensitivity but when I put in a pinpoint operation was working okay. I failed to solve the problem, even when i change the batteries.

                Batterys

I normally use rechargeable batterys but lately my local hardware store has been selling Kodac camera 12 off AA type batterys for £4 a pk and they have been giving me many hours with a full charge which means the machines are working option performance.

I tested the machine with an external adjustable power supply instead of rechargable batteries. The falsing persisted. Accidentally I fumbled a bit with the searchcoilplug and the falsing was suddenly almost gone. I openend the plug and found that the shielding wires of one of the cables was significantly damaged. The eagle is a hipmount version and at times it happens that the cable is pulled strongly. I feel the plug was not designed to withstand excessive strain. Other detector have plugs with screws to squeeze the cable.
I havn't had the time to fix this delicate matter in a longlasting manner but I am happy that it was something I can fix myself.

Now I fixed it and the Eagle spectrum hums like a bee again.

                      Congratulation.
I found a lot of objects with this detector.
