Hi everybody. It was some time ago that I built the Detecknowledgy website and it is only now that I have found discussions that took place over a year ago. I wish somebody had told me then I could have joined in. I do remember though getting a mail from some-one asking about operating frequencies.
In answer to "has anyone built this?", yes, I did in 1979 when the article was written. And yes it did work. (Then the 74HC series wasn't even readily available (invented?) let alone the 4046). In those days metal detecting was still in it's infancy with regard to the hobbyist and all sorts of methods were being proposed. It is interesting to note that this article proposed the use of multiple frequencies for target identification, and indeed the technology was available to produce a machine with all the features of the very latest Minelab's 27 frequency beast. Mind you it may have been heavy on the juice and the arm.
The site was built as a result of questions asked by visitors to the UK Detector Net to answer basic questions about how detectors work, and hopefully to spark off some thinking and more questions. It is very gratifying to find that this has happened and my efforts weren't in vain.
Good luck and good hunting to all you treasure seekers. Cris.
