  • Discriminating Probe?

Perhaps this post belongs more in a Treasure Hunting forum that this technical one...
Anyway, I just returned from a trip to Quartzsite AZ and had brought along a Tesoro Tejon with 5 3/4" Concentric coil, a Tesoro Compadre that has been problematic, and a Goldmaster II. I verified again that the Compadre was still flakey - seemed to have a bad coil connection. I mostly used the Goldmaster II. It worked - picked up flakes of bullets with strong hits that I couldn't even see until I got em home. The pain in the A was the rusty metal junk. Couldn't discriminate it out. The Tejon too couldn't discriminate it. I had brought along a small gold nugget to test/calibrate with. Maybe a softer sound on the hit.

I also brought a Harbor Freight stud finder to try and localize the finds. No way. Not nearly as sensitive as the detectors are. So I had to constantly divide a shovel full of dirt into quarters again and again to try and find the finds...

I'm thinking it would have been great to have a small probe to find and describe the target. The Falcon MD20 says nothing about discrimination. Are there such probes that discriminate or at least give you a clue as to the target material? Got ideas on making one?

There are some projects with BFO pinpointers. The frequency should go down with ferrous and up with non-ferrous targets. However I do not know If such a BFO could be made sensitive enough to pick up the smallest pieces.

Look at my realization: it's supposed to discriminate, although it's not 100% accurate.

The only probe I know of that discriminates is the Intex Cache Probe. Problem is, it doesn't respond at all to ferrous metal, and it doesn't further discriminate non-ferrous. I do know that another company is working on a fully discriminating pinpointer.
