  • Minelab GPX-5000 vs Teknetics Mark 1

How much better is the Minelab GPX-5000 (or other high-quality modern models) than a Teknetics Mark 1? Why is it going to do better at finding natural precious metals and treasure hunting?

First ya can't compare apples with oranges.

One is a state of the art PI.

One is Old School Abet A Good Old School VLF.

Thanks for the links. The comparison that I'm looking for is based upon field use, so it should be comparable. I'm going to be in remote region of a third-world country that won't have metal trash, and will have gold nuggets, platinum, and copper. I'll be doing this for many month (or years if I'm successful there).

If I buy the Minelab's GPX-5000 is that the best for my use? Or is something cheaper better? Should I take 2 different kinds on my trip? I think there is going to be a lot of gold and platinum where i am going to search--enough that I may be staying there for a long time.

My original reason for asking about the Mark 1 is because I'm curious how much we've advanced since the pinnacle of George Payne's work.

        Ok, Your after gold.

        Again No Comparison.

The Teknetics is designed for coins and relics. Running at 6.59Khz. Not a good frequency for finding Gold.

The Minelab is a PI designed for finding Gold.

You need to do Way more home work on the Gold Machines out there.

        Have a look here. http://metaldetectorreviews.net/

Top of the line PI Gold Machines are made by Whites and Minelab.

Top of the line VLF machines by Whites, Tesoro, Garrett, Teknetics and Fisher.

The PI machines are Deep and able to find gold down to Grain size.

The VLF machines are not as deep but can find smaller gold.

        Hope this helps!

          That's a bit like asking, "What's better, a DeLorean or a Humvee?"

The Mark 1 was a fantastic machine in its day. It is easily beaten by newer machines today, even for mundane coin hunting. For nugget hunting, it is a poor choice. No need to even discuss its zero durability.

Thanks for the advice this really helps. I've had interest, and never made the time; now I have some contracts and the opportunity to do some work where the natives don't trust foreigners, but I've been there before and gained trust, so it seems that they will let me search if i split the profits. So I'm going to spend some time there and see how it goes and it it's worth staying awhile. I'll learn as I go. Maybe it will be a bust, but it's worth the shot; I'll see some great country at the very least.

Regarding the Mark 1, i chose my question here because i wanted to know if the new stuff is really that much improved; it sounds like it is.
