Direct sampling is especially difficult in some RF systems, but is not too bad with detectors. The biggest challenge is getting the same level of raw sensitivity, which means a really good ADC. I think the Minelab X-Terras use direct sampling (with the preamp in the loop housing), and the White's Prizm 6T uses quadrature sampling, which looks like the Tayloe mixer.
