I think the best approach to a problem like this is to notify the user with visual cues. It can be something as simple as employing a system with three bright leds:
1)Red = trash, don't dig
2)Yellow = unidentified target, possible trash
3)Green = coin
You'll likely get more tired of walking/digging then interfacing with such a simple system.
