I got so pissed off by altera completely changing their specifications over a decade ago that I simply stroke off the micros from the menu altogether. The most of the hobby projects, and much more, are viable through garden variety components and no micros. Maybe it is a perfect moment to re-evaluate your goals when you think of too much programmable solutions.
Said like a true hardware junkie I have a very good friend who happens to be an extremely good engineer. He won't even design a simple project without including a micro. Especially some of the under 1.00 ones, need a timer? use a micro. need button handling, use a micro, need to monitor voltage, use a micro. A .50 2k pic can take the place of a huge amount of hardware, and
it is almost cheaper than a 555 by the time you put all the components around it to turn it into a timer. TI has one that is selling for under .25 us.

But then my first computer was a 1 mhz 6800 with 256 BYTES of ram, and 512 BYTES of eeprom. Note, that is bytes... Even with that, I was able to do a lot of cool stuff. You set the baud rate with two pots. Back in 1975. I've been programming ever since.
