My trusted sources in Brisbane tell me there have been
numerous complaints by womens groups about metal detecting
being a man's activity. They want attention now!

The "future of discovery" is bringing your woman detecting.

So as a industry leader, Melabs is going to introduce a pink Etric
with accessories, including a pop up vanity mirror(backlit), color cordinated
coils and covers. Over 46 colors will be offered. So my source says

        Yes, a "Chick Magnet"

All joking aside it's probably going to be special.

                * Waterproof - cute, but not precedent for most of users i know. For divers... maybe.

                * Wireless Audio - cute, but not important for many users too. I don't use headphones either way.

                * FeCo Discrimination - What the heck is that!? A new way to present old method of discrimination or....?
Just a notch more on Disc scale ... or something special?

                * GPS Locating - Very Cute! In case user can mark and save the spots. Not cute if somebody else can track the device and it's location!

                * PC Mapping - What the heck is that?

                * Full Colour Display - Cute but irrelevant for metal detecting. Most of the time you can rely only on audio. Sometimes there is no time to waste on watching in any kind of LCD display. What about night searching? In situations where you don't want to be seen?

I must admit; am kind a disappointed. Looks like Turkish Nokta design or similar!
Looks too heavy and too robust.
Coils is reminding me on Explorer/ETrac coil, maybe interchangeable? If yes; than CTX3030 is just another Explorer version...
(Explorer is great, but i expected more now from Minelab)
                  Ok, most important question now:
is CTX3030 just renewed Explorer with additional make up ???
Least i expected was wireless coil.
Because i have it on Deus and once you take it and get used on it - you will never want to change it with anything else.
So, according to photo; there is no wireless coil, but conventional coil with cable... pffffffff!
Also, knowing all the Minelabs those all are too heavy and too robust (except X-Terra's).
Isn't it time to switch on something more lite?
Comparing to Deus's only 890gr - everything else is "elephant" weight!
Nothing can compete to Deus yet, trust me!
                  Cheers!

                      Lots of bling!

Lots of bells and whistles that don't really mean much to me...
If they wanted to make something nice they could have made it just super light with no display or buttons and just have a Bluetooth interface to an ipod or equiv and use that for all the ui etc...

                      Disappointed by ML again.,.,.,

Well it looks the goods. Not sure about the control box design, looks like some cordless drop in battery at the back of the box. We already know its not cause its waterproof.

A run down of its features. (Most likely what they are designed to do)

G.P.S.......Well most likely its function is a general G.P.S. so you know your whereabouts.....but most important it works with the on-board mapping feature that allows the user at a press of a front panel button to map the location of a worthy find. This function gives you Latitude and Longitude for later to be downloaded to some PC Mapping software..........Good feature, for 1: You have one less item to carry with you in the field in that being a H/H G.P.S.......2: It helps with researching a area of interest with known G.P.S co-ordinates, then just a matter of following the direction of the on-board G.P.S.....3: Handy feature to be able to get the most out of the detecting area of interest............+ + +

Waterproof.......A must have for all weather and environmental conditions.......Not sure if G.P.S feature will work while fully submerged under water+ + +

Wireless.......Great to have, no more annoying headphone cords.......+ + + ...........Only issue, it adds more cost to overall investment if and when you end up breaking the headphone unit....

FeCo Discimination........Well , just a visual different way of displaying what may be buried beneath the coil (could be wrong)...........IMPORTANT....IMPORTANT.... The only way i see if there is a major advantage and upgrade to this new detector and existing known feature is if Minelab has finally solved a way of determining if those damn annoying pulltabs are beneath the coil, if so...they are on a winner with this detector in my books, otherwise a E-Trac mockup with Color screen, may it be

PC mapping.....As explained above about G.P.S, most likely works in conjunction to one another.

Colour Screen.....about time, the way of future in detectors.

Overall like i said before, if Minelab has finally solved a way of determining if those damn annoying pulltabs are beneath the coil, then they are on a winner with this detector.

The price of the unit will be a interesting factor. From what i see so far it should not be more than $2000, but if pulltab elimination feature is solved at %100 accuracy, then any higher price above 2K will be justified i would think.

Kind of disappointed myself, by the looks.. that thing ways a tone. Other features..smart find 2 not interesting to me, fbs2 - hm , mayble Carl was right another set of frequencies, may help for better discrimination. But Kt315, really guest good, whit the submersible feature . I was expecting something more ergonomic and sleak , it looks like the back battery came from a cordless drill.. too bulky. Sorry for minelab.. looks more like a kids gadget to me.

I do not think increased performance wise will be the issue. If the design is based on the first patent on the link below, should turn out to be a whole lot better new designed machine.

                            http://www.faqs.org/patents/assignee...onics-pty-ltd/

Yea, the control box could of been designed to look better.

For anyone interested, the other three patents on the link are possible next generation Gold Machines.

What if the CTX3030 combines VLF with PI technology?

In my opinion, we might be missing the point all together...

Never mind the colour screen, wireless audio, GPS or the mapping,
these are all features which easily fit in that slime control box...

Like everyone noted what stands out is the large battery case and
large battery = large power supply = large power consumption = PI

What if the CTX3030 combines VLF with PI technology?
quote from Bruce Candys US Patent 8063777 of November 22, 2011
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------
[...] where the operator is able to [...] select different waveforms
                              [...] examples [...] being time-domain, square-wave, sine wave [...]

                              if I'm not mistaken, then...
                              time-domain .....means PI technology
                              square-wave ....means multi-frequency technology
                              sine wave ........means VLF technology

I don't know if above mentioned patent is the one for the CTX3030, but
it would explain the large battery, and as waterproofing would allow salt
water detecting a machine which can be switched to PI if needed would
                              be better suited...

Back on land you could switch it back to Multi-frequency for
relic hunting, or single VLF, and/or, PI for Gold Prospecting...

                              Just a thought

                              --Eddy C.
