Here's another approach - this camera is very popular with the xtreme sports crowd - now they say they will have a realtime/control app: http://gopro.com/support/article/?21500171 (still have to worry about doing the wifi above water level...)

Problem is, they are not small enough to go into cracks and smaller spaces though. I will keep looking and report back with any new finds.
