For the last 40+ years, I've been using Q-dope for hand-wound coils used in ham radio.
Acetone and Styrofoam (polystyrene packing peanuts) is all it is.
1 pint of acetone will last a lifetime for solvent.
I usually only use 5-10 milliliters of acetone and keep adding packing peanuts while stirring until it gets to the viscosity I want.
Thin for soaking in on bundled wire coils and thicker for coating.

Never had a problem with the Q-dope stripping the insulation off wire. Not even the wire removed from old B&W TV picture tube coils. They were varnished. The new wire I buy is more often than not nylon coated. No problem with these either.

Every package of super-glue I ever used was one-time application.
Q-dope dries out a bit? Just thin with acetone or mix a new batch.
So the price aspect is a red-herring argument.

Hi Overtheedge !

I tried making Q-Dope (Cheap Homemade Super Glue), using Acetone and packing peanuts, but the peanuts didn't thoroughly desolve, but rather formed a glob even though submerged in acetone for a week.

I tried to attach photos showing the can of Acetone used and several other photos showing the results, but after several attempts, I couldn't get the Geotech attachment manager tool working.

Any suggestions on (a) why the peanuts would not dissolve thoroughly, remaining in a glob and (b) how to make attachments work for me ? I have Windows 8.1 and all of the normal programs included in the package. All of the Attachments are saved in my "PC Documents folder".

Recycle Styrofoam: Make Your Own Glue

In the last article on Styrofoam (polystyrene foam), we looked at various ways in which people were recycling the at home. Here we are going to go over a process in which you can turn Styrofoam into a super glue at home through a discovery that comes from a Japanese researcher at Sony.

Tsutomu Noguchi of the Sony Research Center found that the oil from orange peels would dissolve polystyrene. By using a product called Limoene, that contains .5% of the orange peel oil Noguchi found that the polystyrene would break down into a liquid form that created a very strong glue and can be used to create styrene pellets that go back into the production of more polystyrene. Currently, the Sony Corporation is the only major company to mass recycle polystyrene in this way through a full system that they call The Orange Network System. In order to make Styrofoam glue at home you will need some items to get the job done properly. So, first gather the following:
Two or Three Styrofoam food containers
Limonene/Orange Oil *can be purchased at Citrus Depot
Large Metal Pot
Clean Jar or Jars with lids

Once you have your items together, the first thing you'll want to do is get set up in a well ventilated area or go outside. The Limonene has a powerful orange scent and the Styrofoam can be odorous while breaking down.
Tear up or cut your Styrofoam into small pieces
Place your polystyrene into the metal pot
Start off with pouring 4oz of Limonene onto the Styrofoam

The Styrofoam will then break down into a thin liquid form. Take the resulting liquid, which will amount to about 9oz and pour into a jar. Label it well as "Glue" before you put it away, so you and your household will know what it is later.

Chose to use your glue wisely, as it can also act as a type of sealant. Once you use it, just like some of the better super glues it is there to stay and is very hard to get off.

Some peanuts are made of cornstarch, not polystyrene. See if they are edible.

The Attachment tool occasionally flakes out for me as well, I think there is an button for some kind of "old method" you can use. I don't recall what it's called.

I was told a few days ago about another use of this Q-dope stuff: watertighting flat roofs. It is poured over cracks, and that's it.
Only the recipe was to dissolve polystyrene in petrol ... which is cheaper than acetone and less aggressive.

BTW, the color palette isn't working correctly; it doesn't color all the letters in a word, even after I very carefully highlight the characters, trying over and over again.

Easiest way to tell if you have styrene or bio peanuts is to just drop one in water or in your mouth,
if it dissolves its bio and not good to use for the glue, if it doesn't melt in your mouth or water then
you have the right ones and they'll work well for glue..

excuse me did not stay long site I said I problems when I hammerhead pi are investigated, I will inquire if you can mail the glue as I did more and I do not use it anymore and I give him who has need.all the best

This will supplement my previous post #16, dated 9-03-2014, to attach some photos.

Placed one of my peanuts in water and it didn't dissolve one little bit, so not made of cornstarch as suggested by Carl-NC and geoscash1. Therefore, assume my peanuts are made of Polystyrene.

Anyway, here are two of the attachments I was having trouble posting in post #16, showing the brand of Acetone I used (which didn't completely dissolve my peanuts, but rather just formed a glob).

I have several photo views (bottom and side) of the glob in a small jar, but the attachment Manager wouldn't bring those files up in the browser window, so couldn't upload those. I clicked-on the "Add Files" button, but no luck. These last files are still saved in the same computer file folder as the two photos of the Acetone attached.

What am I doing wrong ? HELP !
