    Do these printer you mention have steppers in them? From what i see from teardown videos, old photocopier machines have nice stepper motors and lots of other useful parts.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSU-GeEe0P0

      yes 4 wire ones i got them from the local dump, i used a lot of the parts eg glass for my 3d printer motors for my plotter ir sensors for a filament measurer, and not counting the 30v psu you get its in a box, but i did buy ramps 1.4 best buy ever, the h-bridge was not powerful enough

          you can buy working cnc from China for around 200usd, it is good enough to milling pcb for smd parts 1206, 0805

            I have in fresh memory, when one of my friends bought this toy. It took us week to get it to proper work.


            One of biggest problems was loosing steps on Z axis. It was caused by spindle. It somehow disturbed Z axis controller and we needed to shield power cable.


            Tolerances of rails was also terrible. We greased everything and even then movement were not uniform. It has some places when it breaks itself.


            If anybody want mini CNC, buy single parts and make rails by yourself. I do not know, he just might got some defective device... Still, it is made in China...

                Just a thought:
                Could one of the 3D printers be adapted to do CNC??
                These 3D printer are getting very good and a few have open source software.

                  Basicaly yes, but it depends on what (material) you are going to mill and what tolerance you want to reach (from what i have seen - very poor). Printers are tender, mills are tough.

                  I would go in oposit way - Can not imagine any of printers to hold my ~5kg spindle with 1,5kW rotating 10mm mill with 10000 rpm in wood like oak and feedrate about 50mm/sec

                    Somewhere mentioned floating head arrangement. Now that's a setup! I am miles away from this, makes me feel a bit depressed when I see these rigs. http://www.imsolidstate.com/archives/category/cnc

                        Im just wondering, why Mill the traces, why not mask them and etch them as it always been done ? BTW your set up looks Good! Well done.
                        This is what i've been working on, should be up and running with in a few days . It will shapie mask and drill holes, pcb size that will fit is 170mmx170mm

                          On my heavily modded 6040 I use a spoil board and a fly cutter to initially level the bed. Also I use a spring loaded head which gives a constant cutting depth. Good results but I cant be arsed as I can have 10 prototypes made in China for $1 each for delivery in 12 days, why waste my time milling ONE in two or three hours? I've better things to do with my life.
