  • Best backpack solution for MD

For a long time I have used a normal backpack to go outdoor with metal detector; but it wasn't a satisfaction solution for me. normal outdoor backpack have a series of disadvantages, they are designed for another goal!
a Backpack for MD should be have these requirements:
    - dimensions: almost as long as steam components
    - robustness: hey, out there is not so easy to go!
    - durability: we should like to go out every days!
    - safety: we need a padding, our apparate is like a baby to transport!
    - looking: a green or comouflage style is better; we do not like curious around our searching field
    - space: a bottle of water, something to eat, room for a jacket, would be useful
Vallon backpack is a good solution! it have all almost all the above requirements. But others military surplus could be useful, e.g. some radio carrier backpack seems to be a valid solution too.
    What else?

It's an idea I've been toying with also, Most of my detecting is done in woods and i use a bike when i can to go to local spots, over the winter I picked up the old style aluminum frame back packs, which i plan to make mounts for the stem, coil and shovel holder, along with few small and medium size pouches for snacks and and other gear. It would be easy to fit in a water pouch to it i think.

I found one backpack from army surplus that would meet the requirement.
This is the British army desert DPM radio Bergen, officially known as the Bowman Manpack Radio Carrier:

it has two sections, one for the radio apparate, other one available for others stuff. About 50 cm of heigth, but it could be using also for more MD shaft length (I hope).
