  • Metal Detecting Spade/digging tool 'Alternative',,,,

Hi all,,,,I saw this advertised and thought others may find this a useful alternatie to buying the 'Expensive' Metal detecting spades,,,,Pretty good price and this tool could easily be modified to accomodate 'Teeth' cut down the sides and the tip shaping into a point,,,Fibreglass shaft and a decent handle on it too,,,I made 2 of my own from ordinary spades,,using a grinder, I cut them down, made them narrow enough to dig small holes, i cut teeth into the sides of them and shortened the shafts,,,but they were still a littleheavy though they were great for the job in hand,,,I'll be buying 2 of these to try out,,can't grumble at 15 quid,,,hope the link is useful to others,,,heres the link:-https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sitesafe-Solid-Socket-Fibreglass-Yd-Newcastle-Drainer-/132456018303?hash=item1ed6fe717f,,,,,Regards,,,Mar ty

The Predator model 69 "spike" is a great small digger, 18 inches long, 4 inch wide blade, and pretty indestructable.

Works like a long handle garden digger, serrated for root cutting.

for pebbly beaches I use a cheap stainless steel cut to a point. The sharp point slides between the pebbles better and steel start to corrode before I get home.

But for pasture I use a small width carbon steel boarder spade with edge kept straight. The thinner blade of carbon steel slides through the ground easier and the flat bottom makes cleaning the bottom of the hole better. I keep a file in the car and give it a quick sharped every now and again.

Paid a fiver for my last on offer in Asda. Bright green so hard to loose. Feels weak but has lasted 3 hard years.

never really understood the need for teeth. A sharp flat spade will cut through an inch or so with a couple of downward thrusts. Anything bigger I would dig around.
