What should i be looking for when buying for for building metal detectors?

You can get very cheap one with this basic requirements:

1. Working one (sharp beam, little wear sign, not from heavy professional use..)
2. CRT scope - especially if you tend to build PI detectors (high voltage on coil do not suit well to cheap digital one).
3. 20MHz or more (you do not need 20MHz for MD, but 20MHz is accepted as good scope entry level)
4. Two channel (you need for comparison two signal at the same time)
5. Z-input (allow very simple convert scope to spectrum analyser or band-pass tank circuit tuner).

Try looking for a old Techtronics 475 oscope.

It's a bit of over kill on MD use but there was Zillions of them sold and more then a Pile on sale out there.

In the Military it was the first one I used on a daily basis and Easy to learn.

I've never seen one do the Dead Bug!

Not a 475 but this one would be cool for under $100.00

Agree, I have one 475A too. If hard used main problem you can expect in CRT stage with things as unsharpened beam (focus). Best buy as personal pickup and test before, otherwise (over eBay ask seller for detailed device history, detailed picture of command panel and signals on display (upper limit signal too).

May actually have found one, one of my co-workers used to teach electronics. i asked him if he knew anyplace i could get a used surplus one locally. He smiled and responded he has two in his basement, he would sell one. Not sure what he has, he will be bringing in the owners manual and I will check it out. If the spec are good, will buy it.

Also you must check the chanel sensitivity. 2mV/div or lower is good for coil nulling

It is OK. Not so sensitive as Geo suggested (0.5V : 0.2V) but if you chose 1011 it has x5 gain magnifier.

OK for MD measurement, if in mint condition. Price have to be between 20 and 30 pounds no more for excellent working condition.

Repeat: do not buy hard used device no matter of producer. Hard used mean CRT life is at its end and the scope is after CRT fail only a garbage then.

Prefer Tektronics.
Tele has poor quality and medium analysis. But if there is big difference at money....
Also as WM6 wrote go away from a hard used scope. Problems with CRT and selection switches.

Rigol Digital Oscilloscope

This Rigol digital oscilloscope seems very nice! People seem to say good things about it mostly.

I don't know anything about the vendor, but seems to be the best price.

I would likely replace my old analog Tektronics 465 with this Rigol if it dies. Might even get one just because it's digital and better for monitoring noise, etc.

Hold your Tektronics and buy Rigol too if you can.

Have one Tek475A and can only say that in case you wish to observe modulated and such composite signals analog outperform all low and middle priced digital.

But digital are better in additional signal data comment on display and colour distinction which is in many situations very comfortable.

This one can be use as a metal detector. It has function generator to be used for trigering output transistor on PI coil or make VLF oscilator for IB coil and the best is that it comes with circuit digram and sorce code and forums to help You how to mode the software.

Very nice. This would be handy to have and could handle a lot of MD work. Somebody estimated it would be useful for up to 7 MHz signals.

1. Why does it have 2MB internal storage but only 4K storage per channel? Is it 4K high speed that can be saved to the 2MB slower speed storage???

2. Is there any kind of anti-aliasing filter at the front end to prevent digital sample aliasing?

3. It would be nice if it could sample at a slower rate . For example, 100 samples/sec might be useful for monitoring noise on TGSL LM308 outputs for 40 seconds.

4. Does it have some kind of sample-and-hold feature? That would be highly useful.
