  • Help get Garrett Groundhog meter working again

I have an older 1985 Garrett detector, hasn't been used since the 1980's stored with 3 batteries in place. Managed to replace two corroded battery contacts on the battery tray.
Detector is working but, the meter is not. Tested with a volt meter, current does go to the meter but, meter needle does not move.

I think there was an easy fix but, can't recall where I saw the information on how to fix it.
Something to do with static or magnetism of end stops etc??

I would like to fix the meter if possible.

Sounds like the meter is just stuck.

Bump the detector with your had and us should see the needle move a bit.

    If not, it's stuck.

The Meter cover just pops off.

Pull it off and see if you can free up the meter needle.

sorry to say it didn't help, took meter apart that didn't help, no dust or dirt but saw the winding surface was rusted, put it back together for now.

No maker markings anywhere on it.

Here is the meter set up for the early ADS. I'm sure there the same.

dismantle the meter, put a single drop of WD40 oil (quality brand please) on the axis of meter (use a siringe and be careful) , there's probably rust and dirt where the axis touch the supports inside the meter...

after that try to move the needle of meter using some flexible thing like e.g. a piece of paper...

if all goes right wd40 will do its job and remove most of rusty particles there , and even protect from corrosion: be careful a single drop and not big one, few oil cause are small parts no need to flood there

Meter was toast, no longer will it function. Ordered a new one from Garrett, they still had them in stock.

Meter came in and only had to change the meter faceplate and it looks and works like the original.

Garrett is VERY GOOD about servicing and maintaining their Detectors no matter how old. I sent in my 1996 model of the gold stinger and had them replace the coil and tune it to the machine. I have a old ADS Master Hunter and sent it in and it only cost me $40.00 plus shipping. they are the only ones I have much experience with. I can call to the help line and get an semi appointment to talk with the OLD GUY and he'll answer all my questions.

I'm sure that the Other Manufactures have Similar procedures and will help people who own one of their detectors no matter HOW old. If you help someone with their old model then you have a customer for life and that is more important than JUST selling a machine today.

                        But who know's????
