  • R10/C10 Tank

    Hi Folks,

Just got a HH board. Looks great.

Have a question though: R10 and C10 form a tank that Carl states in the write-up is not absolutely necessary, but he does discuss it at some length. Has anyone included it in his build and able to comment on it? Carl, what's your current thinking on the tank.

Also, C10 isn't marked on the PCB but it's obvious enough that it goes between the pad off Q3's source, next to TP2, and a hole on the ground near C27, with a little "+" silkscreened next to it. Problem is, I don't know what form factor 1000 uF electrolytic fits in that space.

    Appreciate any advice. Thanks.

If you look at Cesar's HH in his thread "Another Hammer Head" you'll see that C10 is a large 63V unit mounted off board.

The PCB silkscreen does not show C10 because I designed it to be on the bottom side of the board. Any 16v or more electrolytic with 300-mil radial pins will work... I lay mine down flat, to minimize board stand-off.

I always use the tank, haven't done any comparison with it removed.

        Thanks Sarge.

I looked up Cesar's post and photos. That's one helluva capacitor he's got. It seems he's run a bit of 2-connector flat cable under the board to make the connection.

Thanks Carl. Yeah, the fog began to part when I saw Sarge's comment and the photo; C10 has to be off board, though a 16 V, 1000 uF can be a lot smaller -- maybe about a cm in diameter I think. I'll follow you and just install the tank since I don't want to do the experiment either!
