  • vhs tape question

I was reading a thread on a music site about using the commercial video tape to make a ribbon midi controller for a keyboard where a voltage is introduced and a variable ground(I believe) gives sliding voltage which is translated into a signal level for a sliding tone on the keyboard.
Would a tape like this be useful in making a coil? I thought it might make a thinner more responsive coil. Or could it be used in shielding.
I was just sitting out here in left field when this little bird dropped this idea by Thanks Wyndham

    Hi,
The tape is magnetic, but i dont think its conductive at all....

I think most tapes use iron oxide coatings, but the coating is not itself conductive. It's the same way ferrite rods are made of iron oxide, but don't conduct. So I don't think it would be useful even for shielding. Good thought, though.

There has to be conductors out there that are as thin and thinner than VHS tape. Question is, would they provide any advantage over using "normal" wires?

Measure the tape with multimeter and if it has a resistance of 1....10Kohm maybe it is time to try it for shielding. Maybe is time to replace Scotch13!!!!!
          Let me Know.

            vhs tape

I thought of that sometime ago and measured the resistance of the tape. It was something like 100kohms per inch so dont think it will work as a shield. I even tried some sony tapes I use for backup and still too high.

              Hi RayNM.
Yes with 100K/in isn't a good material for shielding coils. We need max 10K/in.
So ..... graphit spray and foil are OK for the time
