  • LCR meter

    Hello Gentlemen,

I have been lurking off to the side for a couple of months and enjoying the information being past around. To all I have learned from, Thank you! I am a machinist by trade and have been detecting a little over four years now, mostly gold. I have been working with Hay's electronics on a new coil housing for detecting under brush. We have the housing molds done say for a simple modification or two. I did assemble and test my first completed coil in the field and found a .2 gram nugget loud and clear. I cannot post a picture of the coil! Now I need help in carrying it to the next step, the testing of coil bundle shapes that I would like to try and was hoping some of you could help get me get started in the right direction in testing equipment. I have the normal multi meter along with a Micro Henry meter and was told to buy an LCR meter. I was told I could buy an adequate model for around $200.00 and would appreciate any recommendation in finding a good one to purchase. KinnyP

Motech Industries sell an AWESOME LCR meter (measures Q too) but try EBay. I picked up a $1000 meter recently for just over $250.

      Hi Guru,

The MT 4080A is a very smart looking hand held LCR. No where on the internet could I find a price for it? I looked on E-bay and they have LCR's so cheap I'd be afraid to order one. Being I'm only going to use this meter for testing and making a hand full of coils for myself would you have a recommendation of what to buy? I also think I would like to own a gauss meter to check field strength around the coil. If my ignorance shows through it's because I am ignorant, but have the willing ness to learn. Thanks for the info Guru I will be looking on e-bay for a few day's to see what pops up.

          LCR $ Foam

          Hi Simon,

I had one of my friends that is a little more incline than my self stop by and thinks that your recomemdation K-240C LCR would do all that I need. Thanks for help! Hopefully I will be able to help some of you out there with your needs. I did find out one thing I'd like to share with all on building a strudy light weight coil. The strongest foam core material I found is used in the aero space industry. It is called H45 Divinycell and can be purchased at Aircraft Spruce in California. KinnyP

Thanks for the tip on Divinycell, always appreciated.

By the way, this thread probably belongs under "Tools & Tips", for future reference.

            Cheers,
