I heard of people using candle wax. It has good electrical properties, is water proof, light and not too expensive. The petroleum based one is best, sometimes it is called solid vaseline.

        Gday Rov,

The Epoxy Potting Compound is relatively cheap when purchased from the right places & i don't think you'll buy a better product for the application.
Below is a 250grm pack for about $17, i normally buy larger quantities.

If you buy it in the plastic bags the two parts are seperated by a divider, i normally cut the corners off the ends & pour the epoxy & the hardener into seperate tins. You can then mix small quantities as required seperately.
It works out very cheap for each item, most times it's cheaper than lesser grade substitutes.

Just watch your back... when using it...

use gloves... don't touch the hardner stuff... mix and use... then let cure, but do not touch, do not inhale, do not smoke, use breather, work outside etc

The thing... can give serious troubles and it's not joke... sensitized people can even die for a shock induced by epoxy compounds, expecially hardner.

People here often forget there are risks involved in epoxy stuff... or just don't know about. It's toxic and can cause severe respiratory shock if things go wrong.

Also... don't rub eyes , don't touch sensitive parts (e.g. mouth, nose etc) with gloves... use gloves then if have to rub eyes discard the gloves, rub the eyes, then use new gloves.

            Not a joke.

            Kind regards,
            Max

              Potting CompoundMix

i am looking for a aluminum box with heatsink and a flanged cover for mounting. cast is what i suspect it will be made of. relatively small in size 3x3x1 or 4x4x1 plus height of heatsink, etc. its for a automotive application/circuit i am working on. ive seen some automotive electronics that use this, but i suspect they might have had it custom made, im looking for off the shelf item. the heatsink is some fins top side and the bottom cover is flanged for mounting. i will be potting my pcb.or, an extrusion would work if one side had fins and allowed for a covers, etc.anyone seen a box or extrusion like this? i wish to avoid mounting a seperate heatsink to a box, etc.

You could try Farnell -> http://be.farnell.com/
They have a huge range of enclosures (many with mounting flanges) but I could not find one with an integral heatsink.

I'm using a Bud Enterprises box, found it in the Mouser on line catalog. They've got several pages of enclosures from different manufacturers.
