  • Gold coins detection

    Hi.
A friend before 1 year buried 45 British gold coins in his garden at depth 15... 20 cm. First days all detectors detected them easy, but after one month the detection was more difficult. I went again before some days with TDI, a Garett GTI2500, a Minelab explorer xs and a Lorenz X3.
Results was for crying..... . Only TDI detected them. All the other Nothing!!!. First time who the disk passed over the coins, they made a beep and then nothing. It was as if something was holding the object in memory and did not want to find it again. Very strange. What changed over one year;;;;. I fear that the current detectors are completely inappropriate to locate a treasure of gold and even at depth of 15 centimeters. Forgot to mention that the coins were within RUBBER CASING.
    Any idea????

Gold plated rubbish coins. Rubber releases sulfur over time, so there goes your gold plating.

Monopoly gold coins are not a substitute for the real thing

A question for Geo: Were the coins really solid gold or just gold plated?

Geo, please dig the treasure and make AIR TESTs with all machines:
        1) without opening the rubber casing and then
        2) at open casing.
This will show if the problem is in the casing.

            Hi Mike.
I don't know if the owner will allow me to dig and take the coins out. After the month we have two strange phenomenos.
            1. Metal detectors can't detect it
            2. some LRL detect it now but at first time not. This is the reason that i don't know if he will allow me to dig. But the main problem is not the rubber casing but WHY at first days the detectors located it and now not.

Geo, someone dig your gold in meantime.

If your LRL still can detect it, then above claim is true.

                          Hi Geo,

I am English, i can tell you that 1 pound coins are not made of gold, they are a copper alloy. Do you mean gold soveriegns?

My minelab quattro will detect single 1 pound coins easily at well over 15 cm, no matter how long they'bve been buried.

                          Regards, Jim.

                            Hi Jim.
I am not sure if i said wrong name about the coins.
I attach a photo with same coins. They have 22mm diameter and 8gr weight each

If it's any help, British gold full sovereigns (8 grams) are 22 carat (0.917 fine) gold. Their 'natural frequency' is about 7.4KHz based on (90+45)=135 degrees phase lag.
