Howdy,
I've not been around for a while so don't know if anyone's posted anything on this yet, but I'm quite excited by it.
Buy one of these dongles, (the R820T tuner is supposedly better than the FC0013)
http://dx.com/s/rtl2832u
Install Sdrsharp to drive it, or compile your own version from the many sources available, the Linux version is Gnu Radio or Osmo SDR
http://sdrsharp.com/
The result is not only a fantastic little radio but also a basic spectrum display.

I'm working on an upconverter so that I can receive HF WEFAX transmissions while out bush. The frequency range of the R820T is about 42 to 1000 MHz, but some people have reported much higher signal reception, it would be nice if it could be pushed to receive HRPT.
I've not tried it yet but I plan to have a play with a small loop antenna placed near a running PI coil and see if I can tune anything in, at least it may indicate field strengths of different coils etc.,
I've been playing with APT transmissions from the NOAA polar orbiters.
Here's an image from last night. I've got a dual gate FET amp/BPF just before the dongle and will be adding another at the antenna, a simple quadrifilar helix, to see if I can get a clear image of Antarctica.
I'll post back if I find it of any use with MD construction.
Cheers Kev.
