  • how deep you re DIY Detector on real ground mineralized ground test...

I read many people on this forum with DIY detector like : IDX PRO,SURF PI.DELTA PULSE.Chance pi.felezjoo PI....

Go to 52 centimeter on air test and that is really crazy for me!!!

But my question is what is the max deep from you re DIY detector on mineraliZation medium ground and hight mineralization ground.

MAX DEEP for a pi DIY MACHINE ON HIGHT AND MEDIUM MINEraLISATION GROUND.

AND MAX DEEP FOR VLF DIY MACHINE ON HIGHT AND MEDIUM MINEraLISATION GROUND.

and my last question is for what you re DIY metal detector performe more than the commercial machine on air test.I put a lot of money to buy different commercial metal detector machine In my life and on air test normaly nothing go more than 12 inch on a penny US.

Sorry for my poor english ,I m french...

My bara catch a penny at 6 inches in highly mineralize soil, and my felezjoo catch it at 9 inches. In the beach where mineralization is low i able to catch a euro at 15 inches.

I think the reason that commercial VLF detectors don't have extreme air-test depths is because they cannot achieve great depth in real ground. There is little point making the machine have excessive gain if it is unuseable.
Two commercial machines that can achieve impressive airtest depths are the Fisher F75-LTD and the similar Teknetics T2-SE, which have a 'Boost' mode. This adds +35% airtest depth, but if the coil is swung close to the ground as normal, it gives no advantage in depth. It does allow you to sweep the coil 10cm above the ground (eg. long grass) and still get good depth on larger targets.

In my soil, 9" max on coins for any detector I have ever owned. My DIY IDX is about the same.. 9" max on coins, TGSL maybe 8".

I have a thin corroded Victorian penny 10" down plus a bit of grass in my lawn. Iron about 10" away from it. Both my Bandido with 6" coil and IDX with 10" coil pick it up. IDX with 0 discrimination would pick it up at a normal walk and sweep speed. With normal discrimination you would have to go slow and low but still gives a faint 2 way signal. Bandido locks onto the target much easier. Have to make a 8" for it soon.

Trouble with the larger coil on the IDX is you will be pulling the base of aluminium cans at 24"

Both machines have problems with coke in these waterlogged fields at the moment.

Discussions of detection depth are more meaningful when coil size is stated along with some standardized target sizes and soil conditions. Standard targets such as a U.S. Nickel, 1 Euro, or other coins and, on the big side an aluminum soda can will provide meaningful context. Target condition such as rusted iron or corroded copper may also be useful.

In short there is no exact border line in detection depth because every country has different soil mineralization level and this aspect affect so much on MD performance.. In my country which I considered has a bad soil mineral is less than or even more compare to your country which you also considered bad soil mineralization.. The only exact test in comparing metal detector performance is test it at the same soil, the same target, and the same coil size.

One other huge factor is EMI. It can absolutely kill performance.

Just as a base line, here are a few videos.
My IDX and Shadow X5 can hit a .58 Minie ball at probably 12" easily in the air. (which is buried in my test garden also.)
US Nickels at 15" in the air.
This is what it sounds like in the ground. The bullets are buried at 1" intervals starting at 1" deep.

Except for the Shadow X5, all coils are hand wound concentrics. Point is, you CAN make a DIY detector that performs nearly as well as a $1000 machine.

Agree, but time-long test comparison using buried target could be problematic,
cause there are diverse and colorful life underground (moles par example):

Thank you very much for the information.

But he have people is go to 52 centimeter on air test with white IDX....and in real ground soil is not everage more than 11 inch on penny us or 1 euro that right.

That right No diy machine for now is go as deep as a minelab gpx5000 ,garrett atx or a white TDI like everage 14 inch and more on us penny or normal gold ring in real soil..

It because i make a IDX pro and i m thinking is go deep like a garrett atx.But in real soil i not go more than 10 inch and i need i machine is go very deep on penny,5 cent,10 cent and 25 cent gold ring and silver ring..Because i have a site i found a lot of old ring at 12 inch and more .i just make hole 16 inch deep on hazard on this beach and i found a lot of old money and ring and is not possible i go search with my minelab ctx because is detech nothing....This place is full of stock but is very deep and this beach is very big and now is closed 50 year before.

My question is it is possible to found diy detector is go around 14 inch deep on penny or 10 cents 5 cnets or normal size ring.If is not possible problably i have no choice to buy a garret atx or a white tdi pro because this plage he have a fortune under the sand...

                      Thank stephane

Ivconic I ship you re 2 pcboard (idx pro)this week-end.

Have you tried an offset ground balance with the TGSL. Not tried on a lead target but on my Bandito and a copper coin. With sensitivity at a point threshold remains steady. My copper coin is a marginal signal slightly broken almost iron. As I turn the ground balance anti clockwise the tone gets better and stronger until its really loud and solid. Plus as long as you keep the coil in motion the sensitivity can be tweaked up slightly. Gives me an extra couple of inches. Does get a bit flaky over wet gravel if you go too much minus on the ground balance. Just a matter of turning clockwise a bit at a time until it stable enough.

Been testing on my lawn to see how far negative I can go and found I new target even though I have been over with a 6" 8" and 10" with two machines both up and down and crosswise. Nice solid two way tone one direction but double beep the other. Nice small target in all metal mode. Be interesting to see what it is. Pitch black right now and out for the next two days.
