I have just got this md and noticed a low level high pitched sound coming from the body,I would be interested to hear from any other owners of this md if this is normal ? ,I know that on some equipment it can be a sign of capacitor problems. regards Jamie.

Thanks for the fast reply ,I think the sound is normal it must be the inductors buzzing inside. I was being a bit paranoid as I was testing it in the garden and street and was getting a lot of random signals a bit like morse code so thought it may be faulty but tested in the countryside on the way to work and it is quiet as a mouse so panic over.I would be interested in knowing how to adjust the channel and filter settings and also ground balance if it happened to mention it in the manual. Many thanks Jamie.

There is a piezo speaker inside the main body just behind the circular lable. This squeeks from a low to a high pitch when passing over metal. Additionally there is a vibrator so that you can feel the signal when you hold the handle, so this is probably the buzzing noise. It is certainly not any inductor. You then have the visual indicator for the signal by means of the LED bargraph. All these can be turned off, and I would suggest that the vibrator is off as you don't need it and it wastes a bit of current. Press the C button and the + button together and then switch on the detector. Only the LED and speaker/phones will then operate.
The channel settings are done by switching the control to the speaker symbol then press C and keep it pressed until you get a short beep. Keep pressing and then also press + or - to shift to higher or lower channels. Stop pressing C and the channel is stored. Switch back to normal or mineral for searching.
As to the filter adjustment, the ones one the market do not appear to have the facility to do this. I enquired of Vallon and they said the re-programming had to be done at their factory. I didn't dare enquire what it would cost. It's a shame as varying the filter would have been useful. A slower one would be good for coin and ring hunting as the default re-tune is very fast.

Thank you Eric for all your useful information and greylourie for confirming that my detector is not the only one that makes a noise it is high pitched and not very loud .A bit off topic but I am hopefully going to the coast on Sunday so will be able to give it a go.My current detector a eurotek pro was useless on the wet sand and my previous one a cscope vlf tr1200 worked but lacked depth so fingers crossed I will find something interesting but not a land mine. Being on a bit of a budget £190 was quite an investment so hopefully I have invested wisely .Jamie

The high pitched soft noise was present well away from power lines. Further investigation seems to indicate it originates in the electronics as it is present even when the speaker is muted by plugging in the earpiece. Also, is not affected by the sensitivity or volume settings. Attached is a pict. of my finds, too cold and windy to be out for long. Fired Civil War 3 ringer, half a horseshoe, and ??

The inductor in question is wrapped in velcro and sits against the end of the internal shielded plastic box. This is the only component that I can think will make a noise. I assume it is associated with the main voltage converter but at what frequency, I have not investigated as yet. In later years the inductor is considerably smaller and mounted on the end of the pcb where the recess is.

There is a hole punched in the label at the year number. 06, 07,..........10. Most of mine are 2010, but I had one 2006 model that had a larger inductor at the front end of the electronics module.

Nice photos Eric ,My detector is dated 2010 ,looking at the circuit boards they do look well made, maybe as more come onto the hobby market someone may find a way of adding custom firmware or maybe piggy backing a new microcontroller using the original drive and preamps .But I have to say they seem to perform well as is.I had no problems with wet sand and got signals too deep to dig and strong signals on tiny bits of aluminium and nails

Received my Vallon VMH3CS today. Unit is in exceptional shape... minimal Afgan dust. Date code is 7/2010. At $270 delivered to my door, I am well pleased.
No hum/noise coming from unit other than alert tones.
