  • Problem replacing Equinox 800 coil plug Help needed

    Folks

I would like to ask for some help new to this forum.

Working on replacing an equinox 800 coil plug that was damaged. I ordered a plug from Digi Key part # NOR1413-ND.

Once soldering was all completed based on the original plug pin assignment I tested it and the unit started with the two dashes on the screen on typical start up but it would cycle just doing the same two dashes flashing over and over. unscrewed it and connected it again this time it went CD error 41.

I was looking at the thread in the coils section that references the Nox Coil, specifically Skippy's Pinout update. It suggests I have P1 and P2 reversed but that is actually what I see on the old damaged plug. I cut the original plug so that I could see the cross section that shows the red outer wire in the P1 position

Also I used shrink tube to isolate the completed soldered pins from each other instead of the hot glue fill that is in the original plug.

Pin 1 : TX cold (Shielded wire outer) Red coated copper wire
Pin 2 : TX hot (Shielded wire inner conductor)
    Pin 3 : 3.3 V DC power (Brown)
    Pin 4 : RX + or - (Red)
    Pin 5 : RX - or + (Blue)
    Pin 6 : NC ?
    Pin 7 : 0 V ground (Green)
    Pin 8 : Data (Yellow)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Tim

Do you have a good coil to test? This would eliminate if the problem might be on the detector side.

      Yes

I have two others that work fine

This is what I have and it is accurate at least on my Nox. I have soldered a number of plugs by now.
It is very easy to solder those pins in the wrong order, need extra attention on how you hold the plug.

Pinout of the coil connector (female) while looking at the non-solder side (holes side).

Perhaps you have made a mistake, because I did, many times.

This is the thread I was looking at that suggests I have pin 1 and 2 backwards. In the thread Skippy shows Pin 1 and pin 2 as I have listed above and then he posted an update that shows they were wrong and he flipped the P1 P2 wiring.

My original plug that I cut agrees with his first Pinout list.

What replacement plug did you get for the Nox?

This is the one I ordered.

I was using same picture Skippy posted.

Female connector, need to look at the non-soldering side for correct pin numbers. Note 1 and 2 have a notch between them.

I have used different connectors, but for different purpose. The one you have should work fine I believe.

While experimenting I did see many errors, but can't recall just two dashes. Not sure about 41, but I think CD errors are coil related.

                During startup, few things happen:
                - coil is authorized using center pin 8 for data, ground and vdc pin.
                - control unit tries to fire up the TX coil at lower power before going full on. If there is even half an ohm deviation in the TX coil, it will not fire up.

TX cold (shield) and Ground pins are internally connected in the control unit.

These are the only conditions I have seen preventing unit from starting up.
Every other pin comes into play later.

The deviation of half an ohm can be caused by quality of solder connection correct?

Sorry, I can't edit that post, don't know why.

When I click on them, they are displayed for me and URL is geotech, not my pc. I did upload them. These images are from Skippy's thread, there is nothing new there.

I'll try to attach them again

In regards to the coil impedance. It has been a while, but I recall it was hard to start the Nox unless it was a very closely matched load connected to the TX.

But in your case, I still think there is some sort of a problem with the connection. Most of these plugs are designed for low level signaling, however with Nox we have a line with significant current flowing through.
