Well this looks like the cap.

    it is a polyester/polypropylene cap

    second cap of coffee.

this lets one get some advantages of

polypropylene with the somewhat smaller package

    of polyester.

there are some caps where they use both in combo

because one has positive temp coefficent and one negative

in the right amounts they cancel better and temp

    stability is very goood.

not sure about this one, better than just polyester

    that is for sure.

as this stuff goes more and more to surface mount

the quality of the capacitors will go to crap

    and performance may suffer.

i use alot of polypropylene caps which are larger

I have a ten ounce englehard silver bar

    it is easy to detect

        Ground balance pot

Has anyone finally figured out which is the ground balace pot? There was an early post a year or so ago that was not accurate. [Just currious Troy, I know you lurk here once in a while ]

          Pffff!!!

According to your posts it seems that all of you already have schematic of Troy Shadow...!?? Ts,ts,ts....Lucky you!
Why the hell anybody can not post it here, so the rest of us can see it?
Maybe we can join your discussion a bit...
I am just curious is it good enough? Some people claims it is the best coinshooter these days.....Some dont. Some people even claim that it can beat even great Minelab....some dont!? So, what is the truth?
On the first view(on posted photo) i can say that pcb looks very nice but that plastic box i do not like at all...Screw places looks like melted!? Overall
looks unfinished.....like some chinese toy....Maybe it is good machine but they didnt pay any attention on details....Maybe i am wrong, photo is not enough.....Sorry if i am wrong!

Post schematic and than this thread makes any sence....
          regards

            Box

Actually I find the box pretty solid. It seems to be a higher temp plastic than you usually see. The cover hangs aound the box to prevent rain from entering and it is sealled with an o-ring. You can actually wash it with a hose. I think those melted holes are from the user or there is some black RTV there or something. You can tell it's well built when you have it in your hand. It doesn't feel "disposable" like others. But you pay for it. No schem here either. Love to look though.
I have a quick mpg movie of an air test at 18 inches if anyone wants to watch. It's about 17 meg.

Mr. G. Rat, been long time since we traded!

But on this Troy thing, am i wrong to just use the detector because i like it a lot (I got other detectors too) or should i worry bout what the insides look like???
By the way i can't even remember what we was tradin or how many years back, your friend.

                  O.K.

Of course! Mainly that....I was judging only according posted photo...Sorry..
                  I also had Fisher boxes on my mind....Very solid,very good plastic,also waterproof....etc....
But no one answered my question yet!? Is it such good as it seems?
Can anybody compare it with CZ5 or some of Minelab's?
Welcome to answer...no one is bite here....ha,ha,ha...

Those Fishers always looked bigger than they have to be I think. I like the 9V battery better. It all depends where you hunt. I liked the X3 better on the beach more than the X5. Minelabs never appealed to me contruction wise, although you can do lots of programming. Minlab has unpleasant audio I think. Maybe the newer ones are better. The Fisher I tried made a lot of noise in iron. Had to concentrate too much. I like the descrimination of Tesoro's, the way they can tune in easily to what you want. Membrane switches worry me. Fear of high repair costs.
Someone will have to chime in that has used more machines on a continuous basis.
Anyway, probably the Troys are BETTER than people say. Politics had a lot to do with the opinions, I think.

I have an X5, but don't have enough time with it to form an opinion. I will say that it is one of the best constructed detectors on the market, period.

                          JC1

                          Hi Robert,

It looks melted in to me also.

Fun to get out, and then what do you do.

                          Hot Glue?

Surface mount construction quality can be hard

                          to judge from pictures.

                          Performance?

                          What does anyone expect?

There are many vlfs out there running on

small batteries. And which discremanate just fine.

fine as it is going to get.

My guess is maybe, as good as, no better than

what already exsist other than cheaper to manufactur

                          or nice box or whatever.

But the magic has been done already

                          by many good engineers.

when there are arguements about performance

it is probably because it is pretty much the same

                          as the rest.

                          if it was magic

                          you would hear about it.

I was thinking first to check it somehow than to buy it!
I heard so many nice reports about it...
If you say so than i'll beleive!
                            Thanks and regards!

I was repairing these detectors. These aren't magic devices. The circuit is rather standard. However he is designed extremely optimally. And therefore he has so good parameters. Detector about the similar concept it is Tesoro Tejon. However X5 is taking much less current consumption. Only 18mA. It is the only detector, which current is being increased in after excluding the coil. It was a lot of posts, what none explained why cap 1uF is 180V. I am placing the part of the schema where can be seen when he is connected the cap. When U13 is closed, cicuit is working as Band Pass Filter 5.5Hz x6.5 . When U13 is open, circuit is working as the DC amplifier x10. And therefore cap must be on 180V.
