why dont u use a wave form display like dot matrix instead of using fft etc etc to discriminate,by looking at the display we can decide on the metal, this reduces load on the micro (u need to run the micro at 40,50Mhz @ i instruction per cycle to run the complete transformation but u use more or less 10mhz or 4 Mhz)
