      Vacuumn Forming

Hi Vacuumn forming is easy I have built a Vacuumn former that takes a 800 x 600 sheet of ABS and use it to produce my own coil housings up to 28 x 18 inch eliptical I use a garden Blower / Vac 2000 watt it works for me the heating is the expensive part but I use a heat gun and infra red lamps the cheap alternative. Hi IBGold,
thanks for the info. For the heater part you can use Nickel-Chrome wire like... in some hairdryer or hotgun and the like directly on top of an oven plate. That way you'll be away from fumes during heating.

What do you use as breather of to convoy outside fumes ?

What's the maximum thickness of walls you can reach using your 2KW blower/vac?

How do you prepare e.g. metal mould/matrix ? CNC or something else ?

          Best regards,
          Max

                          some points

RE that design above post no 14. This would only be possible for injection moulding. Forget it. Would cost 100 000, 200 000, 300 000, just for the mould. Then you have to have large amounts moulded, they wont do 50. Got to be thousands. Out of the question for small scale production.

That means Vac Form is only way. 2mm thick sheet. Not paper thin as in pictures. You need proper pump and heaters for 2mm thick ABS sheet.

ABS sheet must be stored in dry place. Get it damp and its scrap. Find out what sheet sizes you can get before you build machine, or you throw away a lot of sheet.

Molds can be machined from solid ally. No need for CNC. Just need skilled machine operator or gifted amateur. No need to cover every thing in hundreds of holes like it says in books. Just a few will do
                          .
Trimming molded parts is the big big problem

Two part ally loaded epoxy is great way to make moulds.

Wooden moulds do not last long

Reminds me of the old Fisher boxes from the late 70's, 440 & 550 series.
