  • Homemade - Very Cheap Sand scoops

Hi my first post although i have been reading the forum for some time and built a couple of beach detectors with help from the forum, so i thought i would give a little back.

I don't know if these have been posted before and i haven't had a chance to use them yet and probably be able to get out for a while but here they are.

If you live in the UK and have a Poundland nearby i found a colander that will be great for a dry sand scoop.

and in a Family Bargains store a cutlery strainer which is 4inch diameter and about 7 inch long, just have to flatted the rim. I also cut the head off a broom i purchased from there which has a screw in handle.

Total cost of both scoops was £3 + four bolts and a couple of washers.

good idea to get you started, i refuse to buy a metal scoop mainly for 3 reasons 1 they are too damn expensive, 2 there METAL(no good for me i like to run the detector over the scoop), 3 far too heavy even alloy ones weigh 4 pounds.
untill someone invents something better, i'll carry on using my horse feed scoop with holes drilled in.

Agree. I also use a horse feed scoop. Not the prettiest one, but for €2 it works fine.

Maplin's £5 scoop is good quality.

There are a whole bunch of scoops available, but if metal is not your thing, try a plastic feed SHOVEL, not a scoop
you can see it in a video I will try and find and post.

Watch a couple of minutes and check out the modified plastic shovel.

            Thanks for the link

Seen the plastic feed shovel before looks to work well in soft sand

thanks guys, all good ideas, i have actually made myself a light weight metal scoop, recently i hurt my back after i had been knocked of the KR1S, so bending down can be problematic and painfull.

it works great, the bowl is a stainless strainer from asda(walmart), the handle is from a drill the mounting loop is removed and the bolt replaced by a shorter set screw, this fits through one of the lower holes with a 2 pound coin sized flat washer on it.
you then screw the drill handle onto that as tight as it goes, it works great as a hand scoop, but what i did was take the arm rest off an nhs crutch and replace it with a bike hand grip, i took off the end of the crutch(rubber bit) and inserted the ally shaft into the black handle.
once adjusted to length no bending down is required and its strong enough to push in with your feet, pull back and shake out the sand.
similar strainers are available from ikea, but they are slightly bigger and a lot weaker, you would not be able to stand on those and pull on them they would just distort.

Here is the shovel I made after seeing that video. Bought it at DeNaults or True Value hardware and made the modifications. A bit a pain to make but it is great to dig in sand as shown (a nickel > a foot under). Doesn't do too well in water though.
