  • Questions for shielding on a basket-type coil

I have a 8" clamshell I bought from dfbowers to pot a basket-type coil for my HH. I know basically what needs to be done and how to do it after reading through the mountain of information found here.

I'm using graphite spray and would like to know the following before I begin:

    1. Is it better to embed a wire in both top and bottom halves, then connect them both to ground, OR embed copper strips around the top-half edges of the shell and just solder a wire to 1 of them - as in Dave Emery's tutorial "Construction of Coplanar Search Coils"?

    2. Do I need to leave a shield gap on both top and bottom halves, or just one (document above says only the lower)?

    3. How much space do I need between the coil and shield?
