  • Tesoro Tiger Shark Mod.

Newbie to modifications, but 30 year detectorist here. I have bought an old style Tiger Shark with removable coil. The coil is bad, so I have bought a set of IP68 - 5 pin connectors (panel and wire mount), since they no longer have coils for this model and I don't want to loose interchangeability.. My problem is, I'm not sure where the wires from board go to what pins (old connector is epoxy filled so you cannot see where they go on pinout). Also I have bought 8" umax donut coil and will need to know what color wire to what pin on that connector as well (to match up properly to new Male connector on box). Any help will be greatly appreciated!

real, can you give pics inside housing of board and give more info on coil? - inductivity, resistance of both windings.... any help from you, because here is free info exchange.
russians say some adage - in good stated question there is ready answer.

Thanks kt315. Here's some shots of the board. I'm not sure of the inductance etc.. of the coil, but it's a stock Tesoro # C80887Click image for larger version

Also, Red wire above orange and black cut wires was soldered to metal nut on old waterproof connector. New connector is plastic, so not sure where to go with that? Which of course means that orange, black , purple, and grey wires go to new pinout connector - but where (in relation to 3 wires plus sheild on coil connector).

thank you Real for pics. I have some data on tesoro coils, but not on the Tiger Shark, need in data on your coil. for example

          black red 16.56mH 67.4 ohm
          purple grey 1.03mH 0.45ohm

Enjoyed the visit with you 1731x2real this morning. Thanks for reminding me of this forum been awhile since I stopped in, I have always enjoyed tinkering with things, I don't have much experience with the Tiger Shark but will see what I can come up with and get back to you. Steve.

              Thanks, Steve, same here!
OK here's what I get for resistance readings on the new coil; Red to Black=22.4ohms, Grey to Black= 23.4ohms, grey to red= 45.3 ohms.

As I mentioned even though I am a Tesoro dealer I am not up on the Tiger Shark, I am afraid of any water deeper than my bath tub lol.

Since you left a bit of wire on the connector after cutting it, you should be able to check to see which color wires went to which numbered pins with a multimeter set to check continuity.

Here is the wiring on a Tesoro Compadre which uses uMax coils -

                Pin 1 = Orange
                Pin 2 = not used

                Pin 3 = Purple
                Pin 4 = Grey
                Pin 5 = Ground/Shielding (center pin)

Thanks again Steve! I'm really getting close to being confident about putting her back together. Let's review for my sake; On the coil wire, I've got exactly what you sent me. On the box side I'm assuming my grey wire goes to grey coil wire, purple to purple, orange to orange, Black (PC board side) to shield on coil wire, which leaves me with the red wire from the PC board which was originally soldered to the metal nut on the original pinout connector. The new connector is all plastic (see attached)Click image for larger version

You said - the red wire from the PC board which was originally soldered to the metal nut on the original pinout connector.

Again i do not have a Tiger Shark or any experience with them, but it seems that having the red wire soldered to the metal nut would serve as one of 3 things

                      1) ground if the coil shielding wire is tied to the connector
                      2) if inside the detector's "box/control housing" has anything metal that is used as a emi shield
                      3) does absolutely nothing at all such as in wiring up a Compadre where as pin #2 has no connection at all.

If I lived closer to you we could get together and between us we could get er figured out, but I know you will end up getting it going. Good luck with it.

Here's the info on the connectors. I bought them off EBAY from a Chinese manufacturer, but the appear to be really good quality. The cable connector is self adjusting for almost any diameter coil cable.

SkiWhiz, you're the real deal. All Tesoro dealers should be as helpful as you. You have gone way out of your way to call me direct and discuss my problem, and attempt to find a solution, and I really appreciate the help you have given with no compensation for yourself! I know where my next Tesoro purchase will come from. If you ever get to northern Indiana, look me up and I'll take you out water hunting and let the glimmer of gold in your scoop help you get over your fear of the water. HH my friend!

thank you Real. thinking additionally you have to put some gel/lubricant for more waterproofing at inner resin ring...
